Megadeth is successful, but they will never approach the succes of Metallica. True, Megadeth’s style is still a little thrashier, but their newer stuff, IMHO, doesn’t even compare to the older stuff. The new stuff seems kinda sterile, where the old stuff seems like it has much more feeling. That said, I have to say I feel a little silly debating Megadeth vs Metallica. Of course its silly in a good way. It makes me feel a little younger. ---

didn’t Deep Purple do the Orchestra thing aswell? Metallica? they didnt make the establishment come to them. they just told their fans that and expected them to fall in line. I lost what little bit of respect for them the day they MURDERED “Whiskey in the Jar” by Thin Lizzy, after all the Napstyer furore. ---

No offense, but how old are you? I say that because in the 80’s Metallica wasn’t at all in the mainstream. I remember getting picked on in school for wearing a Metallica t-shirt. People said it was “kill your mother music”. Before One, they had no video support. Before the Black Album, they had no radio support. Yet they were still able to sell out arenas. I saw them this summer and they STILL cater to their older fans. The first 4 or 5 songs were all pre-Justice. While most bands go out and play a hour and a half of greatest hits, Metallica still plays two and a half or three hours of hits plus they throw in forgotten tracks. The only thing that has changed is now there are a bunch of frat-boys who don’t know half the songs. ---

I will say this though… I WILL continue to go to their concerts… they always have been the best live band ever. At their concerts they rock 80’s style… and they know it. ---

Using Napster as a marketing tool, and many many many websites like [MP3.com](http://mp3.com) and [Garageband.com](http://www.garageband.com) are putting everything a band needs to be successful at their fingertips. Plus, new technology will make the future of self-managed artists a promising one. This will certainly super-saturate the market with mediochre bands and only those that do their homework and actively promote online will get the benefit of exposure. As it is now, my band, [JerkWaterJive](http://mp3.com/jerkwaterjive) is enjoying much success from playing on the Warped Tour with Green Day, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Papa Roach, to performing at an upcoming Earth Day festival in Atlanta being broadcast nationally by Turner Television on April 21st. All this, without a record label. We recorded, produced, and sell the CD ourselves all with the help of [MP3.com](http://MP3.com) and Napster!!! So, support your local artists!!! I met Jason Newsted on the sidelines of a San Francisco 49ers game. It was right around the time that “Re-Load” was coming out. I already knew that the “Load” cover was a blood-and-semen picture from controversial artist Andres Serrano, so I asked him if the band had done anything unusual for the “Re-Load” cover.
