I am firmly convinced that every culture/section of the country has it’s own unbelievable thing to eat. This comes from the evidence of several menus and a stop in a small town in eastern South Dakota where I had chislic, which I discovered is deep-fat fried antelope.

But everyone seems to like ice cream, no matter how terrible it sounds, so I was wondering if there are any flavors that fall into the repungnant category. I already know about squid ink ice cream, I just wonder if there is anything else.

Trust me to ruin something as wholesome and uplifting as ice cream. Little children on playgrounds are next.

I don’t know if it is still around, but Baskin Robbins had bubblegum ice cream at one time–with actual chunks of gum in it. I don’t imagine that the flavor itself would be any worse than regular bubblegum, but the idea of trying to eat ice cream around a gradually accumlating wad of gum is pretty repugnant.

Funny you should mention that, Cher3. I was just at Baskin Robbins 30 mins ago, and was noticing how icky the bubble gum flavor looked. Yep. Still there!
Pray tell, what is squid ink ice cream?

Squid ink ice cream would probably be ice cream made with squid ink, scredle. Just a guess.

How about the fish sperm ice cream on Iron Chef?

I’ve heard that garlic ice cream is a standard at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Although I imagine that after sampling all the rest of the dishes there everything tastes like garlic for a week anyway.

Bubble gum’s weird pink color and big-sprinkles-from-hell consistency she just about do it for me.

Squid Ink ice cream is gray and has the aforementioned ink in it. I am told it is rather tasty but it was by the same guy who told me I didn’t need oil in my crackcase so I don’t believe him.

I have actually watched Iron Chef, which is where I saw the squid ink ice cream the first time, but I have never seen Fish Sperm Ice Cream on the show. However, this flavor sounds pretty bad. Can you imagine being the guy who invented it?

I was thinking about the ice cream shop I wandered into on a hot summer night and actually tasted a spoonful of Blueberry Taco ice cream. Blueberry Taco. I couldn’t make this up if I tried. I’d say someone quit THEIR job in a huff.

Hey! I happen to LIKE Bubblegum Ice Cream from Baskin-Robbins!

And I really miss deep-fried ice cream. Local Mexican restaurant back north had rock-hard chunks of very frozen vanilla ice cream covered in a crunchy coating. Tossed into a seperate fryer (so you didn’t get the oniony taste from other fried foods), the coating would cook , sealing in the ice cream (which would soften enough so you didn’t break a tooth).

Damn fine foods.

Count me in as a lover of bubblegum ice cream. It used to be a tradition in my family to go out for Chinese food and afterward head to an ice cream place for bubble gum ice cream. You carefully collected the gumballs out of the ice cream, making a big, colorful, sticky mess in a napkin which you carried in your hand or stuck in a convenient pocket until you finished the ice cream. Then you chewed the gum and blew enormous bubbles.

I am not fond of some of the tropical fruit ice cream flavors like papaya and mango, but I know people who swear by them.

Too bad I no longer eat ice cream. I could go for some bubblegum right now.

Umm…

Who’s job is it to get the sperm from the fish? And do they need little fishy versions of Penthouse to get the poor buggers aroused. OOOH!! Look at the set of fins on that tetra. 🙂

But are you serious about this? Someone had to come(pun accidental) up with that idea in the meeting.

“Hey, I know. Why don’t we put sperm in the ice cream?”

“What kind of sperm we gonna use?”

“Why not fish sperm? We got lotsa fish in the back.”

“OK, lets do that for next weeks show.”

YUK.

Mudshark–you don’t like ice cream? You don’t like any kind of ice cream? Do you just not like cold foods, or do you not like creamy things, or…well, why _don’t_ you like the stuff?

As for me–I _hate_ passion fruit. That stuff can ruin anything. I don’t like passion fruit Italian ices, passion fruit juice, passion fruit Jelly Bellies, or passion fruit ice cream. Ick, ick, ick.

There’s a disgusting petrochemical taste to the stuff, I think. It’s strange that I hate passion fruit with such a–well, with such vehemence. But hate the infernal crappy things I do.

A popular flavor of ice cream in Hong Kong is called **ube** - a purple yam. Imagine potato ice cream with purple coloring.

OTOH - we also have **sesame** flavor ice cream. It’s grey with little black specks - but it’s delicious.

I don’t either. The very smell of the stuff makes me nauseous. But I do like yogurt, cheese, real whipped cream, and ice cream. Go figure.

Ube flavored ice cream? Hmm…sounds interesting. I’d like to try it some time. Same thing with sesame flavored ice cream.

I recently had some ginger-and-green-tea flavored stuff. I didn’t like it at first, but you do acquire a taste for it after a few spoonfulls. It’s got a very complex taste; the sharp ginger dominates at first, but the green tea flavor is provides a softening complimentary flavor after the ice cream has been in your mouth for a second or two. The aftertaste is a delightful, well-balanced combination of pungent ginger and delicate, subtle tea.

I’ve had some very good honey flavored ice cream, red bean ice cream, and Chinese five spice ice cream. A now defunct (unfortunately) ice cream shop near me used to have a wonderfully sour, light and cleansing kiwi sorbet.

I’m also pretty partial to Haagen-Dasz’s hazelnut gelato. I think it’s especially decadent with a bittersweet chocolate sauce.
