But I just found out that I can use my Icelandic cc abroad. At a ridiculous exchange rate, but I can use it. Still sucks for the students abroad though
That would require us having Euros on hand, right And there being some sort of generally accepted exchange rate. Just so people know how much they make and how much they can spend.
My company is however quoting major sales in Euros now, for the time being.
Several thousands. Loads of people go abroad to study. All doctors, for example, need to go abroad to specialise. Most people who go abroad however, do go to work (and are therefore actually benefiting from the current crisis in the same way tourists are), so the students abroad are probably not that many.
And I also just found out that my buddy who is studying in the US, is on a full USD grant with spending money. So he’s quite OK.
You should declare war on the US. Then you go fetal and we take over.
Don’t you guys have huge steel plants because of your geo thermal energy. That still has to work ,does it not.
As usual I don’t think Mr Brown has thought this through. Can we think of another smallish island nation which has a gigantically oversized financial sector relative to its economy and is critically dependent on foreign earnings based on shifting lots of money around? Hmm…
Been there done that. We Dominicans have seen our country wrecked more than once, the difference is that we are never surprised by the stupidity and corruption of politicians and bankers, and we have less to lose.
If you have told me that Iceland wll be reaching to the IMF for money a year ago I would have suggested you saw a shrink ASAP.
Here hoping that things get better soon. It does not bode well for anybody.
The thing is that I can’t say I’m that surprised this is happening. Nobody could expect the stock market to rise for ever and the good times to keep rolling on… but everyone just kept listening to the band as the Titanic hit the iceberg.
And here’s another connect the dots for you. One of the biggest industrialists (Baugur - quite big in the UK) owned a hefty stake in one of the biggest banks (Glitnir) and for some reason Glitnir kept lending Baugur money way past due time. And Glitnir, only a week before the collapse, sold shares in a mutual fund -which invested in loans to Baugur - to the public, calling them 99% safe. It turns out that 1% came through and nobody is getting any money
I hate to be the guy looking to take advantage of somebody elses bad situation, but do you have any idea how much a guy could buy one of those big ass-kickin toyota (or other) tundra trucks for these days (used)?
I thought it would be cool to have one, as I plan on spending some time in Iceland, but last year I gave up on that idea when I found out they were going for $80,000+ in many cases.
I know Iceland doesn’t have their own Craigslist or eBay, but is their an online place where people post ads to sell motor toys and the like?
Don’t feel bad, as people are desperately trying to get rid of their cars and nobody is buying. I just this weekend recommended my friend’s dad in Sweden to take a look at the market here
You can get a feel for the used car market on these two sites:
