I suspect that might be why a lot of those toys have a tiny screw holding the battery compartment shut… ---

Incidentally, I’ve wondered if the radio stations who play all-Christmas music in November and December do it as a cost-cutting measure so they can lay-off employees during those months. ---

Christmas music doesn’t do much for me, although it’s always nice to hear some of my favorite artists do some of the traditional favorites or their own holiday music. [Bob Seger’s Little Drummer Boy](http://www.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DS50cf3xIb50) [Goo Goo Dolls - Better Days](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-kHleNYIDc) I always look for those, but Dweezil Zappa did a cover of [You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmMnPShwfrU) which has been a big hit in the household lately. Thankfully I can avoid it for the most part. No christmas music where I work and thus far none of the local shops have gone over to the 24 hour christmas format. There are some good songs out there, though I’ve only heard one of them on the radio. My local modern rock station actually played this one at christmas. Earned them huge respect from me. [Fairy Tale of New York by The Pogues.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwHyuraau4Q&feature=related) Honestly the greatest christmas song of all time. This is my new favorite christmas song, even though I’ll likely never hear it on the radio. [Don’t Shoot Me Santa](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cglLJJ0Czo8&ob=av3e) by The Killers. Worth a watch for homicidal hobo santa alone. And this one for those who are sick of christmas in general. I went to my favorite liquor store today and they have a baby grand player piano. I heard maybe three songs while shopping and was able to enjoy it. I think I’ve found the problem with most Christmas songs and being inundated for a month plus. Lyrics. ---

I don’t care if radio stations play that crap, it’s easy enough to ignore. However, the fuckers at Alaska Airlines decided to play it in the cabin pre-flight **before** December 1st. Is there a human on earth who thinks that’s a good idea? Reminder to everyone: Christmas falls on December 25th this year; we don’t need to talk about it or hear about it until around December 15th. Two weeks seems like plenty of time to ramp up any one day holiday. ---

I ran into the CVS across the street from me last Christmas Eve, to buy something (I’ve since forgotten what). Not only were they playing a non-Christmas song on their in-store radio, it was “Imagine”. With lyrics. I would make sure to shop at that CVS even if it weren’t across the street from me, just for that. ---

What about regional Christmas songs? Any of those that you particularly loathe? The only thing worse than the corny old crap they’ve been subjecting the nation to for 60 goddamn years is the crap that is just barely good enough for a niche market. The fucking Italian Christmas donkey song was in heavy rotation in NY and, briefly, it sucks out loud. The only thing worse are the meathead jackoffs who like it. Then there’s that execrable motherfucking hippopotamus song. It is on the radio, somewhere, every second of every day for a solid month in Oklahoma City. I thought I had finally escaped it’s particular brand of treacly, shrieking evil, but 2 nights ago it played while I was at Costco here in Dallas. Not just knitting needles in the ears awful, it is actually a stain on the honor of the mighty hippo. When my plans finally start to come together, I will ride upon my largest war hippo and together we will slaughter everyone who plays, sings, or likes this song. Then, I will release a holiday album of bellowing, incoherent screaming, and squishy sounds. ---
