Yeah, but I didn’t self-diagnose… the FAA diagnosed me with an Ishihara test so it’s official in my case. 😉

But you are correct - the vast majority of deutans are males.

What a wonderful gift for both of you. This is a great thread, and I thank both of you for sharing.

Thanks! I think I’ve gotten as much out of it as Isamu has. Hopefully Ascenray will have similar results.

Very interesting thread! I just wanted to make two minor comments about color.

> [@Isamu](#):
>
> … In any case, even if I do see something different when I wear them, how do I know that this is what color normal people see? Right? There is no way of knowing…
>
> … greens have so much more variation in them … I totally get why people rave about seasonal foliage.

Even with two color-normal people: how can we know we “see” the same colors? When I see orange I get a particular sensation but I wouldn’t know how to describe it except circularly. (“The color of an orange”?) Even if emotional reactions are similar (“Red is hot, Green is cool”) it doesn’t follow that the sensations are the same. I suspect they’re not the same, if the question even has meaning.

I’ve watched several of the Enchroma videos on YouTube and have been struck with how often the suddenly-colorful viewer is impressed by Green. “Wow, I never knew there were so many shades of green!” Blue is already familiar; orange is new (“So that’s what orange is”) but not exciting. But more often than not, as least for the adults, it is Green _Green GREEN_ that generates the excitement.

What makes this slightly “paradoxial” is that [technically there’s much more discernable variation in browns and purples than in greens.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_difference#/media/File:CIExy1931_MacAdam.png) The ellipses in that diagram each represent ten colors discernable to a normal-vision person. As you can see the ellipses in the purple region are much smaller than in green.

I once had a job that involved evaluating images for color degradation due to file compression. I noticed that it was imperative to render greens and flesh tones accurately because they apply to specific living things with known colors. OTOH, with the browns and purples that show up on roofs or distant mountains, it didn’t matter much what color you rendered!

There are multilple test you need to do to ascertain the precise CVD, Ishihara may be sufficient to please aviation authorities (or [FALANT](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farnsworth_Lantern_Test)), but not for a clinical diagnosis. IMHO aviation standards are too strict.

That’s a limitation of the 1931 color space. After 1976 it was restructured to be perceptually equal. In short, it’s not a limitation of our visual systems but in how we had represented them. Though typical computer monitors are severely lacking in the green range…

Those _MacAdam’s ellipses_ were placed on a 1931 CIE diagram, but it’s not the area on the diagram that is proportional to number of discernable colors — _for that you need to imagine the diagram stretched_ to make the ellipses depicted all equal-sized circles.

It might be paradoxical for people with _normal_ color vision, but for people with deuteranomalous trichromacy green is where they are deficient. So, if the enchroma glasses work as intended the person _should_ be something different in the green range.

My most noticeable issues with color are on screens.

1. Google Maps’ traffic indicators are difficult—I can’t tell the red and green lines for stopped and free-flowing traffic apar

2. Any map that uses too many colors—especially multiple greens, reds, and browns—to indicate significant differences, such as population density, race, income, etc., are useless to me.

3. Until Apple recently upgraded IOS, I thought my messages to non-iPhone users were in orange bubbles rather than green.

4. We had a shared database at work for which we used color tags—I had to beg people to avoid using the green one, because unless they were adjacent, I confused the green and grey stripes.

5. When the graphics department came to me with the template showing the company’s new format/standards for charts, graphs, etc., I had to point out that several of the color combinations didn’t have enough contrast to be useful to me. (They did nothing to fix that.)

6. When we are in the car, my wife is often pointing to the sky or trees or bushes and saying “Do you see that? Such wonderful colors!” And even if I’m able to see what she’s indicating the colors don’t seem as intense as she is describing.

7. I love night sky-watching, but I’ve never been able to distinguish different colored stars or the redness of Mars. They little pinpricks of light all look white to me.

I know the glasses aren’t supposed to help much with digital displays or at night, but I’m looking forward to swing the outside world in sunlight differently.

I tried my iPhone’s color filter for deutans and was very disappointed. It didn’t make things look more vivid—it just looked weird.

Metallic paint on cars is often difficult for me—metallic greens, golds, bronzes, etc. often when stuck on a traffic jam I’ll just idly look at the cars around me and even if I don’t say anything, she can tell when I get stuck on the color of a nearby car—“yes, it’s green,” she’ll say. And I’ll feeling like she’s reading my mind.

My beloved 1987 Toyota Corolla was a dark sort of brownish car—I found it difficult to describe. I was surprised when some people described it as pink. I looked up the official atoyota color name and it was “rose-beige.”

In general I dislike greens, maybe as a result of how I see them—I stick to blue, black, yellow, bright red, purple, grey, etc.—in my clothing choice.

But I love my 2010 Scion XB in “Hypnotic Green Mica.” I’m wondering whether the glasses will make my car explode into an exciting green I’ve never seen.

Several years ago I had occasion to construct a webpage requiring seven different colors; I tried to accommodate Deuteranomaly. Since there are Deuteranomalous individuals in the thread, I hope you’ll indulge me and tell me if the seven colors I ended up with work:

I can’t see the image—it’s just s series of identical boxes.

It’s hard to tell just from the key itself, but it’s better to try it without giving me the color names.

Keeping in mind that computer screen displays are notoriously variable…

In the text, the green looks green to me but you can’t discount the power of suggestion, given that the word spells “green” as well as being green. The “light blue” is the sort of light blue that means I have to ask someone with normal color vision if it appears green/greenish to them or if they also see it as blue.

In the portion with the colored boxes, though, I don’t see green, I see a _brown_ - it’s like the green coat I have that for years and years I thought was brown (well, it IS brown to me!). I think it’s because the way the boxes are formed the colors are less saturated in that part of the visual field. Saturation is an important factor for folks with green weak deuteranomaly - we can see highly saturated greens, and very “pure” greens, but when the saturation falls and/or they’re starting to shade into other colors we start having problems. Colors you see as shades of green we might see as blue, yellow, or brown.

That said, I can distinguish seven separate colors in your box display, they’re just not the same seven colors you’re seeing, and there’s probably less separation between the brown/green and black for me than for you. Depending on what you do with the webpage, that diminished contrast may or may not be a problem.

For example this map of the 1824 presidential election results is problematic for me — [1824 Presidential General Election Results](https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/national.php?year=1824&f=0&off=0&elect=0)

There were four candidates that got electoral votes. It might have been fine if they had just used four colors. But instead they shaded each color depending on the percentage of the vote. That’s way too many reds, greens, and browns for the map to be useful to me at all. It just looks like a jumble of colors that don’t indicate anything to me about who won what.

I’m told there are actually several variations on the “colorweak” forms of color dysfunction, so we may have different versions of “not normal color vision”. That’s getting into some very fine distinctions and clinical stuff, most of which I haven’t delved into much.

That’s way too many reds, greens, and browns for the map to be useful to me at all. It just looks like a jumble of colors that don’t indicate anything to me about who won what.

Yeah, issues. Some of those reds turn into browns for me, one of the three green shades they use looks blue to me, but hey!, the yellow works fine.

I just see identical blue boxes too, and I have no colour deficiencies. I think that’s a message board loading thing, not your eyesight 😉

I was wondering what was going on. I pasted the images into Word and could immediately see the differences.

Ah, okay. I pasted it into Word to look. At first glance, I see

Orange (probably?)
Pink (probably?)
Green/Red/Brown/Black???
Yellow
Green/Red/Brown/Black???
Light Blue
Dark Blue

So the green definitely doesn’t work for me. It could be a lot of different colors. Take that away and the remaining colors might work.

But I’d like to see these colors in a practical application like a map or a graph.
