I haven’t heard anything, but then I was mostly stuck talking to the chief, who was kind of a dick, and not really forthcoming with information (probably at least partially because he didn’t know it). When I realized I actually did still have the plate number for the girlfriend’s car buried deep in my pocket, I went outside to talk to him as he was about to leave, but he didn’t realize the significance of it and thought I was just giving it to him to help him find Dave. “I don’t need it. We know he’s at work right now,” he grumbled, then walked off to his car before I had a chance to set him straight. He’s one of those people who make you feel like he’s doing you a favor by allowing you to talk to him. Annoying as hell. ---

I’m glad the fucknugget is behind bars, Neutron Star. I’m guessing he’ll try to give you a half assed apology at some point. It always kills me when someone ddeliberately does something like this and only apologizes after they get caught. Someone billed a shitload of long distance calls to me once, and when I found out who did it she went through this tearful apology and couldn’t understand why I was still furious and demanded repayment for the ginormous phone bill I suffered. I would do as Nursecarmen suggests and check to make sure Dave didn’t run up some bills in your name or get a credit card with your SSN. (I know someone who did that to another person, so its a possibility.) ---

Speaking of which, Dave didn’t actually pay the rent did he? If he used Neutron Star’s money to pay his own rent I don’t consider that valid. [/QUOTE] Depends on the state, but where I live, if Dave had a rental agreement, written or oral, he cannot be evicted without a writ of eviction from the court. The landlord is restrained from taking any action whatsoever to remove the tenant or his possessions before a hearing, even if the tenant stops paying rent. This includes changing the locks, turning off the power or water, or removing any possessions. The landlord can even be compelled to stay out of the rented property, except in case of emergency repairs, and they may not harass the tenant regarding the grounds for eviction. Even after the writ of eviction is granted, the landlord must store the tenant’s possessions at the landlord’s expense for 28 days, and allow the tenant to retrieve them. If the tenant has not retrieved his possessions after 28 days, the landlord is free to dispose of the property any way he sees fit. Now there may be some exceptions in the case of a tenant who is in jail, but I am unaware of that. ---

You can’t just rent a storage unit then say “oh yeah, bill it to someone else”. You need to pay a security deposit and first month’s rent upfront. Regardless, such an action by Neutron OR the landlord would be illegal. They need to get the sheriff to handle this. ---

If its not possible…and **Fear Itself** has pretty shown the reasons its not, its a moot point. I only suggested it because Neutron Star wouldn’t want this guy having uncontrolled access to the house I’d think. ---

Any way you can change the locks and mail him the new key (to be delivered to the apartment, where the OP collects the mail and stores it safely for him)?. That way you are no locking him out, just protecting his stuff. ---

It does suck that he still has legal access to the apartment. But from what he’s described of this criminal genius is it more likely that he’ll talk to him and his gf and be like, “We’ve been caught! Qucik, grab the TV, PC and Xbox and let’s run!”. Or is it more likely that him and the gf (okay Fernando too), will slink around and avoid as much contact possible? ---

The OP should find out if his neighborhood has an agreement with the city to be “crime-free”, like mine does. If there is such an agreement, the commitment of a felony breaks his oral lease, and he may not be able to come back legally. It’s a long shot, but it could happen.
