# I'd say we're about due a new Robin Hood movie, no?

I mean, it’s been fifteen years since Prince of Thieves. Surely we’re due the return of the hooded man? I can see it going two ways… An historical, based-on-fact telling of the legend, a la King Arthur, played deadly serious with Sean Bean as Robin. Yeah, Bean would be excellant in this, as long as based-on-fact doesnt turn out to be boring-as-fuck like King Arthur did. The other way this could go is a riotous action-adventure, Pirates of the Carribean style, full tilt curtain swinging swash-buckling laugh a minute mayhem. Not sure who would play Robin, but I’m sure Kiera Knightly would be in there somewhere. Heck, I’d sit through either of these.

I should point out that Kiera-cum-Amazon-Queen-Gwen was in _King Arthur_, which made it no more watchable.
I’d rather see a rollicking _Pirates of the Caribbean_/Errol Flynn style version than an historical drama type. Let’s just hope [Orlando Bloom](http://www.warofthering.net/photoforum/data/521/medium/foxtrot03dec.gif) doesn’t get the part of Robin. I’d be amused to see a slightly dopier, unsure young Robin, who can nevertheless rise to action. Am I the only one on the planet that really truly enjoyed _King Arthur_ and didn’t find it boring in the least?
Personally, I think the swashbuckling Robin has been done enough, for now. I would really like to see something more serious. While I enjoyed _Prince of Thieves_ (thanks to Alan Rickman), it tried to be too many things. It tried to be serious, it tried to be funny, it tried to be an action movie - and it just missed the mark.

Keira was in a TV movie when she was about 15, playing Robin Hood and Marian’s daughter. It looked pretty cool, though I’ve never seen it.
I’m surprised Robin Hood has not been a West End Musical yet. Unless it has and it bombed.

Isn’t Sean Bean a bit too old for the part? After all, he’s 46. And who would they get to play the Sheriff? Topping Rickman’s performance will be a very tall order. I can see Bean as Little John, though.

Heh. After Prince of Thieves, my wife and I had a long discussion on the question of who would have made a better Robin Hood than Costner. (Long because the summarized answer was, “Nearly anybody.”) We finally settled on Elwes as our perfect replacement …
I think we laughed for about an hour when we saw the first preview for Men in Tights. 😃

Sean Bean’s accent would be perfect for it - those dastardly Yorkshire folk are forever trying to nick Nottingham’s man anyway ! As for his age, I guess he could do something more like [this](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075147/) little gem.
King Arthur wasn’t boring to me so much as a wasted opportunity - a chance to de-hollywood the myth and get closer to the old British legends - instead logic was thrown out the window and nothing made sense if you stopped to think for a minute.

Eh, I thought it was OK (and yes, that largely was because of Ms. Knightly running around in leather thongs), I just couldn’t figure out what the heck it had to do with King Arthur. Maybe some of that stuff actually historically happened; I wouldn’t know. But I can’t see any way the events of the movie could conceivably have inspired the Arthurian legends.
And having never seen Alan Tudyk in anything other than _Firefly_/_Serenity_, I can’t see him as anything other than a big softy. Maybe Robin Hood could be played as a big softy, but I’m not seeing it.

What is this _Prince of Thieves_ movie you seem to believe happened? I recall no such movie in the Robin Hood genre and quite frankly think you’re whooshing me. NO SUCH MOVIE EVER EXISTED!
My unrealizable goal for a movie in the late 80s/early 90s was a Robin Hood movie scripted by James Goldman (a prequel to his sequel _Robin & Marian_) with Peter O’Toole reprising his Henry II role (in the beginning when he dies during battle with Richard) and ending years later with Katharine Hepburn reprising her role as Eleanor during the reign of King John. No such luck.
My cast:
Robin Hood = Paul Bettany
Little John = Robbie Coltrane (or Ethan Supplee if he can do an English accent)
Prince John = Alan Cumming
Sheriff = Brendan Gleeson
Marian = Rachel Weisz

Well what do you know. I see this thread started and then on TV I see the BBC saying that they are going to make a new series about Robin hood.

Well, so far there’s not been an historical, based-on-fact telling of the King Arthurt legend. Not a bad idea, though.
Sean Bean would be great. I heard a few years ago about a possible filming of the novel _In a Dark Wood_, telling the story from the Sheriff’s perspective, but apparently it’s not happening. _Robin and Marian_ is the most believable version so far. (Though I liked the version with Patrick Bergen as Robin and Uma Thurman, who looks like a Pre-Raphaelite painting, as Marian.)

Has there ever been a “historical, based-on-fact” Robin Hood movie?
Is such a thing even possible? Don’t we have even less reliable historical information about Robin Hood than we have about King Arthur?
