If I had to guess I’d say it came out in 1987. The story starts with days getting progressively shorter, until its’ predicted there’ll be no daylight at all by a certain point. The story takes place mostly in New York especially in Central Park where a huge hole opens up and eventually progressively nasty bugs come from within. The protagonist is an old guy who’s trying to find a replacement as he’s been a sentinel of some sort. He knows what’s going on and how to stop it but feels its someone else’s turn to save the world.

Anybody know it?

I didn’t know there were books before Nightworld.
