# Identify this caterpillar, please

A friend of mine took [this picture in southern Georgia](https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207811366900913&l=de72d75614), and is wondering what species of moth or butterfly it is.
And here’s hoping that I’ve got the permissions set right.

Some type of Hawk Moth (there are a LOT of them!).

Agreed - some sort of [sphingid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphingidae). And the caterpillars are both variable and often vaguely similar to each other. The [Banded Sphinx Moth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eumorpha_fasciatus) might be a reasonable [guess](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eumorpha_fasciatus#/media/File:Eumorpha_fasciatus_Larva_Green_Variation_By_Shaina_Noggle.JPG). But I wouldn’t absolutely put money on it.

[Hmmm…](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eumorpha_fasciatus#/media/File:Eumorpha_fasciatus_larva_Pre-Pate_Color_Change_By_Shaina_Noggle.JPG), didn’t notice that shot at first. That morph looks mighty close - might actually be the critter.
