I doubt that it’s anything sinister, actually. Could it be part of a stove shown? Heating system?

It does look as though it might have been some kind of rugged protection for a metal stove/heater - firebox in the enclosed part, flue in the upright part, maybe some sort of hotplate or radiator on top of the middle section.
