I live in Northwest Montana and have started to see this plant/flower pop up on my property. At first it was one or two, and now there are dozens. My gut reaction is that it’s probably a weed, but before I start ripping them out of the ground I’d like to know what it is and if it’s a friend or foe. Can someone fight my ignorance?

That looks to me like [yellow salsify](http://www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Wildflower/plant-Salsify-Yellow-bloom-big.html) or some relative of it. Some view this as a weed, others would call it a wildflower.

You could bring the picture of it to a flower shop and see if they know what it’s , some wildflowers are under protection .

Yes as noted by **pinkfreud** , yellow salsify.
If you didn’t plant it, then it is a weed.

They do have an interestingly large dandelion type seed dispersal structure.

PS Excellent picture, making identification possible.

Agreed. Tragopogon dubius. It’s a European invasive, all over the place now.
