Filmed in the late '40s I think. Kind of a _noir_-type movie.

A naive “spinster” schoolteacher from San Diego (I think) is on holiday in Mexico where she meets a suave and debonair (European?) gentleman who sweeps her off her feet. They marry after a whirlwind courtship and take off to drive through Mexico on their honeymoon. As I recall, his real aim is to snag a Green Card, and the “romance” does not end well.

The stranger, if not Charles Boyer himself, was definitely of that type.

Hold back the Dawn. With Olivia De Haviland and Paulette Goddard.

Maybe?

Ooh, I think La Beck is onto something here.

> _ **Hold Back the Dawn** _ is a 1941 American romantic drama film in which a Romanian gigolo marries an American woman in Mexico in order to gain entry to the United States, but winds up falling in love with her. It stars [Charles Boyer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Boyer), [Olivia de Havilland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivia_de_Havilland), [Paulette Goddard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulette_Goddard), [Victor Francen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Francen), [Walter Abel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Abel), [Curt Bois](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curt_Bois), [Rosemary DeCamp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary_DeCamp), and an uncredited [Veronica Lake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veronica_Lake). […]
>
> Georges is a Romanian-born gigolo who has arrived in a Mexican border town seeking entry to the US. He has to endure a waiting period of up to eight years in order to obtain a quota number […] After six months he is broke and unhappy. When he runs into his former dancing partner, Anita Dixon, she explains how she quickly obtained US citizenship by marrying an American, who she then, just as quickly, divorced.
>
> Georges resolves on the same plan. He soon targets visiting school teacher Miss Emmy Brown who is in Mexico on a day trip with her class of about fifteen young boys. […] By claiming she is the exact image of the lost love of his life, his seemingly intense ardor toward a stranger is plausible, and they marry later that same day. However, Georges must wait some weeks before entering the US, and Emmy returns home with the boys.[…]
