The DJ on the radio this morning said that “everyone in the US is celebrating Memorial Day today.” Sure, she’s Thai, but she’s half farang – her father is an American, she grew up in California, and her English is that of a native speaker (this is an English-language station). I agree it sounds odd to “celebrate” this particular holiday itself even if you look at it like it’s their lives that are being celebrated. “Commemorate” would be better. ---
