I’ve read the original thread several times now and I find I have to agree with echo6160 on this one. The “not a warning” seemed like an over-reaction and the responses in this thread seem very over-the-top. I don’t think what echo6160 had to say was out of line in any way, or an insult, or jerk behavior. I just don’t see it. So: just wanted to make this a less than unanimous pile-on.
The post was excessively snarky, moderation was spot on. Besides, echo6160 didn’t get a warning, was only told to dial it back.
This thread is a waste of time, get a hobby, echo6160.
So, we don’t have to worry about calling anyone an idiot, we can just say that they “sound like an idiot”, and that’s our get-out-of-jail-free card.

If you feel the need to point this out to him, that’s what the Pit is for. Otherwise, address his arguments, and his behavior will be self-evident.

Yes, that’s an insult. There’s really very few contexts in which “You’re an asshole,” is anything but an insult. Even if the guy you’re talking to is really, really an asshole, calling him an asshole is still an insult. Something can be both true and insulting at the same time.
And insults are not allowed on the Straight Dope outside of the Pit.
I don’t believe you are reading the “Not a Warning” correctly. It is not intended to be heavy handed- it is simply clarification. Whilst the poster will know (usually) that a warning has been issued, it signals to other readers “Okay we don’t think this is a good angle - please knock it off. However, it is not that serious that a warning is needed”.
