Not exactly great art, but I’d have to include the painting the Eric Stoltz’s character did of Lea Thompson’s character in “Some Kind of Wonderful.” I had enough of a crush on her that the movie seemed better than the standard John Hughes stuff. It wasn’t, of course…age and wisdom have showed me that! ---

Jodie Foster’s film _Little Man Tate_ featured paintings supposedly done by child prodigies. In reality, some of them were the work of artists and art students in Cincinnati, where most of the film was shot. ---

Even though matte paintings are collectible (if often supremely unwieldy) and undeniably artistic (and often brilliant) works in their own right, I’m going to disallow the matte work because they’re usually intended to provide realistic (even in a sci-fi context) background, as opposed to making an artistic statement within the narrative, as in a painting of a character’s great-grandfather. You have to draw the line somewhere. ---
