…what would they be? The only restrictions are that search engines don’t count, for obvious reasons, and you can’t follow any link that doesn’t lead to a site on your list. Feel free to choose by whatever personal criteria you wish, however, be careful, because you’ll be at these sites for quite a while…

Hmm, good question. Really makes you think about your priorities. In no particular order:

I presume we’re not including work-related sites? Otherwise all 10 would be the sites I need to do my research (journals, software sites and data archives.)
For non-work related sites:
1. Straight Dope
2. Google Groups (Usenet archive)
3. Amazon
4. CNET (mostly for the shareware archive)
5. Yahoo Japan (includes auctions, e-mail, weather and train timetables)
6. CNN
7. NPR
8. an online bike shop
9. one of the Palm software archives (Palmgear, TUCOWS, etc)
10. Mapfan (map of Japan, like Mapquest)
