Oh **THAT’S** rich. When will people realize that the decision about what is acceptable for jewelry on men or women is culturally and socially derived? I mean, there have been plenty of cultures where men where earrings (or the like). I’m so sorry that this doesn’t fit into his white bread world.

Some men look good in earrings, some don’t.

Personally, I agree with the Guv. I don’t like to see earing on guys. Of course, I despise tatoos also so I guess I’m really in the minority.

Well, everyone’s entitled to their opinion, of course. But his statement, aside from being incredibly sexist, was just plain STUPID (God only wants girls to wear earrings? I guess that’s why we’re born with them?). Not to mention that it would be nice for important political figures to at least _pretend_ they aren’t sexist, discriminatory slobs.

Ah. Well Andy. I agree that, if either of us met him (Gov. Siegelman) we’d probably both agree that he’s a “Good ol’ boy” and many of his comments/opinions would be distasteful to us. I certainly don’t agree with the latter part of his statement (…born…), but in general I agree with him that I wouldn’t want my teen to be wearing an earring through the eyebrow, tongue, or bellybutton. Sexism aside, I guess I just think it looks silly; be it on boys or girls.

Dire, I’ll thank you for not treating “politician” as if it were an insult, if you don’t mind. But I certainly agree with your sentiments. Damn if this guy doesn’t make me want to go out and get another coupla piercings to go with the three earrings I already have. (Two in the right, too, just to piss **everybody** off.)

It seems to me MD that you’re almost as intolerant/nearsighted as the venerable Gov. Wearing body jewelry/art anywhere is silly. Yes, even women wearing earrings and or necklaces serves no practical purpose whatsoever. Neither does a woman’s shaving of her legs or a man’s shaving of his face, unless of course it has some sort of aesthetic appeal. Then it becomes a medium of expression and hence an art form. Was little Johnny attempting to create a “work of art”? Probably not, but he did anyway which is the truest form of art in my opinion.
