Back in the 80’s, there was a program where they would give away 20. I planted them at a house we lived in. They are all very impressive now, but we don’t own the house.
Something like this was the major clue to the solution of a murder mystery, which I can’t remember anything about except that. There was a pine tree growing in a field with no other pine trees around, and it turns out the murderer buried someone there and they had pine cones in their pocket or something like that. The police dug around the roots of the tree and found the skeleton. Apologies to anyone who happens to be reading this story at the moment. Carry on.
I have cedar trees, oak trees and 1 pine on my lot. We are continually removing (or just mowing over) volunteer saplings from all of them. I suggest checking the ground around your preferred tree, and look for already started trees.
Yeah, we have maple and some kind of fir on our or directly adjacent to our city lot (~4000 square feet) and every year I have to dig out several saplings. I’m amazed at how fast some of them grow. Our former house is now a rental, and I had not been in the backyard of the property for maybe 10 months and I found a sapling already over six feet tall in the back yard! (Why our tenants, who do the basic yard work like mowing and raking never bothered to mention it, I don’t know.)
