There is one and only one positive thing to come out of this disaster of a presidency. That thing is the racists now have no compunction about showing exactly how racists they are. Case in point: the OP.
How is ABC Television allowed to have a show entitled “Blackish”? Can you imagine the furor of a show, “Whiteish”! Racism at highest level?
-The Fucking President of the USA
Well, if the strategy to unify the nation is to get (almost) everyone to think that Trump is a giant flaming asshole, I’d say it’s working.
As I recently posted in a concurrent thread,
The OP, like so many people these days using exactly the same arguments, is making it very clear that they don’t really give a shit about police brutality against white people except insofar as they can use it as a “gotcha” to resist any suggestion that they should give a shit about police brutality against black people. How do you imagine that that attitude in any way reflects well on you?
Won’t someone please think of the white man? checks around for my tiny violin
There’s been several of these threads lately. Nice of everyone to out themselves I guess.
Dodgy, old son, please fuck the fuck right off and take your chum Tim with you.
If I can offer gentle advice to the OP: Really, there’s two problems that intersect at the death of George Floyd (and others).

Cops are generally off the rails in regard to the violence they dish out. They’ve been that way in some situations as long as I’ve been alive. I can pull several incidents from my own friends that don’t really have a racial aspect, but they could have died. My friends being violently abused by the cop just required them to be seen as powerless or deserving the violence. But:
-
For a myriad of reasons ranging from simple racism to economics to ease of prosecution, black people in the US are unfairly targeted by law enforcement and unfairly come to the attention of the behavior mentioned in #1. As a result, they die in their hands at a rate that far outstrips their proportion to the general population.
To be honest, I haven’t protested either other than bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen when the subject came up. But I’ve reliably done that for decades, and haven’t seen much change other than my being more disgusted with the situation, despite what sometimes seems like progress. If we can only get a critical mass of people angry against these two issues when both 1&2 are fulfilled, then strike while the iron is hot. Hopefully it will be constructive toward either or both. You only have a real reason for shame if you hesitate when the victim isn’t like yourself.

Have you ever, personally, protested when anyone was killed in police custody? Same question to Tim.
Nope. Nobody. I don’t approve of police killing anyone in their custody, but I’m not the protesting type. I tend to focus more on things like obeying the law and providing for my family.

“Life is good for me, because I’m not targeted because of the color of my skin, so I don’t give a fuck about anyone else.”
Must be nice to lack melanin AND empathy.

Thanks for misquoting me. And how do you know the color of my skin? We’ve never met. Assume much?
Bottom line: if everyone took care of themselves, nobody would have to take care of anybody else. Tend your own garden.
ETA: my apologies if I’m not being enough of an asshole. I don’t normally post in The Pit, but this thread got moved here after I first posted in it.

It’s called paraphrasing, and you might have a point if we didn’t have multiple instances of people being killed by police while doing literally nothing illegal, threatening, or untoward just this year.
Don’t shit in other people’s gardens then complain that they’re upset, because YOUR garden is completely shit-free.
ETA: Just to ask: what color IS your skin?

Life doesn’t work like that. People aren’t omnipotent, often they need help no matter how much they’d prefer to take “care of themselves”. That includes you; I rather doubt you spontaneously manifested as a fully educated adult with a full back account.
And there’s plenty of other people who will try to harm others for profit or amusement.

…ETA: Just to ask: what color IS your skin?
OMFG. I cannot believe, in this day and age, that anyone, even a Doper, can be so incredibly racist as to ask such a question.

That’s not a racist question in the first place.

False modesty does not become you.

Like Breonna Taylor? Worked her shift, came home to sleep, shot eight times in her bed. That ever happened to youi?

… but I do protest when black people are killed in police custody, wouldn’t that make me a racist?
Of course it would.

I agree with the spoiler.
OK, just outta curiousity . . . does each of y’all’s black friend (I know you each have one) agree with you?
There are 2 issues that those protests are for that people like the OP don’t seem to understand.
1 is there is a inequality due to race, that serves to dinish us all, every human is diminished if a class of humans are. It means that some of us arbitrarily can be moved to a lower status, which means you can, you just diminish yourself and all of us. Only the hyper-elite need a underclass. If you don’t support protests against that you are a racist.
2: There are bad cops, the protest is also routing them out and holding them accountable, putting the police on notice that they will be heald responsible for improper behavior, and putting procedures in place that allows this. When we give some a badge, we expect certain things of them, we give them much more power then a regular person, and that can attract bullies that will use this power improperaly.
As such in the case of the OP, no that person is not being a racist under 1, but is supporting police brutality under 2.
Right wingers who trot out dead white men to score points against BLM are lower than low. They ask “why aren’t you outraged about this dead white man” without recognizing that, if anything, they care even less about that dead man than 99% of BLM supporters.
Not only do they not care at all about his death, they use his unwarranted death to score cheap political points against a group that is working to prevent the very actions that caused his death.
It’s beyond disgusting.

I don’t approve of police killing anyone in their custody
Silence IS approval.

And how do you know the color of my skin? We’ve never met.
White fragility is a phenomenon that manifests itself very clearly even via a messageboard. Nobody here can see the color of your skin, but everybody here can see that you’re displaying a lot of white fragility.
I don’t approve of police killing anyone in their custody, but I’m not the protesting type.
Well, if you aren’t willing to take any action to push back against systemic problems that you claim you “don’t approve of”, I don’t see that you have any room to criticize people who are taking such action. ISTM that on the contrary, you should be grateful to them for being willing to take up any of the slack on the fight against injustice that your selfish lazy white ass can’t be bothered with.

Silence IS approval.
He’s very busy:
I tend to focus more on things like obeying the law and providing for my family.
You know, doing all the things all those people killed by cops should have been doing. Don’t you get it?
