Yes, but (like bordelond) only because of Koyannisqatsi.
If I say the words "Pruitt-Igoe" to you with no context provided, do you know what I'm referring to?
Ditto. I’m 46, but I know of it because I grew up in StL.
I cheated and looked at the link to remind myself. I did recognize the name but didn’t remember the significance until I looked it up. I have a vague memory of seeing article in Life magazine about it. “Pruitt-Igoe” is such a distinctive name that it stuck with me.

I’ve wondered in the past about how many architects have had two of their large-scale designs destroyed.
Minoru Yamasaki designed both Pruitt-Igoe and the World Trade Center towers. At least he had passed before the WTC destruction.
Interesting that most people said they wouldn’t know anything about it. But if someone says “Pruitt-Igoe” and you think “Cabrini-Green,” then you actually do know something. I mean, you didn’t think it was a country or a musical group or a holiday food. You had a feeling it had something to do with urban something. Maybe I do have a great memory.
I’m actually surprised Cabrini Green is as well known as it is. I grew up here in Chicago, so I just assumed it was a local thing folks knew about, and I would not expect anyone outside this area to be aware of it. I mean, I can’t name any housing projects in any other city, at least not that I could think of, so I wouldn’t assume anyone would know ours. I mean, yes, they were known for high crime, but I had no idea their reputation was so wide spread.
I myself (age 44) have never heard of Pruitt-Igoe and had no idea what it referred to. I actually thought it was a quasi-phonetic spelling of some sort of phrase.
Ditto and not from the movie* Candyman*.
An interesting note from the poll, no one under 29 votes in polls on the SDMB
No clue what this is.
I don’t think anyone said that they thought “Cabrini-Green” when hearing “Pruitt-Igoe” without any context, but that after reading the link you posted, Cabrini-Green comes to mind as a more famous housing project that people *would *know.
Well to clarify, I had no idea what it was. Once I followed the link and saw it was low income “projects”, I said that the one I do know was Cabrini Green.
Oh. Okay. I assumed people were making a connection before reading the link.
Cabrini Green was also the setting for Good Times, so I think that may explain why some of us folk are more familiar with it.
Had no idea. Then I saw the picture in the Wikipedia link, and then instantly knew its relationship to postmodernism.
Haven’t read the previous responses, but I voted Yes, over 65. But it helps that (a) I grew up in the St Louis area, and (b) we studied it in an urban planning course in college.
- I’m fairly certain I have seen those photographs before, but the name drew a complete blank.
Cabrini-Green I learned of from Nicholas Lemann’s The Promised Land during college. I am also almost certain Cecil has mentioned it a few times in his columns (could maybe Google that to be sure).
I think Cabrini-Green is mentioned in some rap songs, too. I have a faint recollection that the “Fort Green” referenced in Cinderfella’s 80s rap hit “Dana Dane With Fame” (title?) is meant to represent Cabrini-Green. Off to Google.
Yeah, Koyaanisqatsi is how heard about Pruit-Igoe
I didn’t recognize the names of either Cabrini-Green or Pruitt-Igoe.
I did know that there were large-scale high-rise low income housing projects that were started with at least partially good intentions, but had terrible results. It’s possible that when I first learned that the info included the names of one or both of those specific projects, but that I retained the general info without remembering the details.
I was totally wrong on this – Fort Greene is a section of Brooklyn, NY.
I’m 28 and live in the St. Louis area and… sort of. I’ve heard the name because it’s been mentioned in the news a few times over the past few years in relation to moving NGA. I know that it was on the north side and that’s it. It’s the kind of thing that I would hear and sorta-kinda feel like I ought to know what it was as a well-informed person, but I also kind of just figured it was a defunct corporation of some sort and, for some reason, thought it might have something to do with aviation.
