> No judge vetted by conservative power-brokers would ever dream of overturning Roe. It’s far too valuable to them as a rallying point. The only politicians who have any opposition to abortion are all Democrats.

I don’t quite see the basis for that second sentence, there, but even if one sees “conservative power-brokers” preserving _Roe_ out of self-interest, they’re not solidly in charge of the Republicans any more, and arguably haven’t been since Gingrich was elected.

> You can expect a general, widening persecution against women. Women thrown into prison for miscarriages, hospitals refusing to treat pregnant women for any reason out of fear of being accused of engaging in abortion, and so on; the things you normally see in anti-abortion countries. There will probably be a large spike in the rape and abuse of women in general, as well as a general effort to keep them from voting. Expect many polling places to be surrounded with cops & thugs who will drag off women and imprison, beat or rape them in order to intimidate women into not voting.

Since over 50% of the population is female, I think there will be a significant backlash to this male drive. I predict there will be more women running for political office, a trend which is already in place. Example: our local county board, traditionally a good-ol’ boy bastion, historically never a majority female, now is 43% women.

> Women…who have the means to do so would have to travel to another state (or out of the country) to have an abortion. Other women will likely go to unlicensed providers or illicitly obtain abortion pills. Many of these unlicensed providers won’t follow normal standards of practice, or the pills may not be what they purport to be. As a consequence, women will die. ☹ Abortion providers and women seeking or obtaining abortions will be prosecuted and jailed…

Isn’t it (sadly) ironic that this is the outcome of laws which purport to make women safer, like requiring operating room upgrades, physician admitting privileges, etc.? If the end justifies the means NOT, someone is being hypocritical.

How possible? Enough to bet $1000 that it will be overturned in the next 5 years? I mean, there will supposedly be the votes the second Kavanaugh gets in. Why wait?

> If the Supreme Court were to overturn _Roe v. Wade_, I suspect the worst case would be to revert to the pre-_Roe_ situation in which states would be permitted to outlaw abortions.\* If this happens, abortions will immediately be banned in those states that have so-called “[trigger laws](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_the_United_States_by_state)” on the books. These laws are written so that abortion would immediately become illegal if _Roe_ were ever overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. According to Wikipedia, this includes Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia.

Virginia would immediately overturn the trigger law. As would many other states. I think if you actually overturned Roe v. Wade you would see many of the states that were anti-abortion at the time of Roe would no longer be quite as anti-abortion.

I doubt we will see the bloodbath of dead women and abandoned babies that iiandyii predicts but I think we WILL see an unprecedented surge in Democratic support.

Some other states will likely go ahead and re-enact laws outlawing abortion, such as in Texas or other Republican-controlled states. Ultimately, one might think that this would help overcome the chokehold that the GOP has on so many Southern and midwestern states, but I won’t hold my breath.

I think the Supreme Court could repeal Roe and if there was a federal law that outlawed abortion they could uphold it.

Sure, they’ll probably be facing legal investigations. But they’re working on building up the dual legal system; one system for rich people and one set for not rich people. And the rich people system doesn’t involve things like public defenders, police brutality, capital punishment, and maximum security cells. It’s more geared to concepts like legal teams, appeals, fines, and community service.

Which is one reason I said that I expected that it would be accompanied by a massive effort to suppress the vote of women, to terrorize them into submission, and strip women of their civil rights in general. It would be a huge red flag to the Right that “Now is the time to rape women, to beat them, to kill them”.

I’m expecting that abortions would be legal when accompanied by father’s and/or parent’s notarised permission two months ahead of time, a battery of tests to show that drugs didn’t influence the patient’s mind, repeat visits for counseling, all on the patient’s dime (and which will take at least 6 weeks), the abortion clinic should have at least 5 floors 13 rooms and only 1 main entrance, and be separated from any other medical services, the fetus is certified as unviable and 3rd trimester abortions are illegal.

Why overturn Roe v Wade when you can obtain 95% of the same effect with well sounding conditions ?

You forgot that the clinic also can’t be within 3000 yards of a school, church, synagogue, mosque or Starbuck’s.

The main reason overturning Roe would be a boon to the Democrats is because most of the aborted are/were future Democratic voters. Although that effect won’t kick in until 2-3 decades from now.

B/c about [three-quarters of abortion patients are poor/low-income](https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/induced-abortion-united-states). Although about 40% are white, and poor white people are often not Democratic voters.

Another thing I think **Velocity** ’s overlooked is that the poorest people (and of course, the incarcerated) tend to vote at very low rates, lower than the working poor. So criminalizing abortion could be a boon to Republicans by pushing more families into extreme poverty and off the voting rolls.
