happy heathen, overall youve done a very good job, but your interpretation of dreck is a bit too overreaching for my taste.
a few examples: nick lowe, curtis mayfield, and todd rundgren (ok, ill give ya ‘bang the drum’) ARE NOT DRECK! sheesh… and some more of yours dont qualify, as well.
i dont think anybody identified rico’s ‘uneasy rider’ as charlie daniels.
heres a couple more from me. i forgot one while i was typing, maybe itll come back.

happy, you and rico are still the kings, even though both of you (rico, the beatles?) have thrown out a few non-dreck numbers.
essvee, Time Passages was sung by Cat Stevens (no idea who wrote it though). While I realize that I’m nowhere near happy heathen and rico in terms of volume alone, I refuse to be counted out. Time to bring back Mr. Manilow:
We walked to the sea,
Just my father and me
And the dogs played around in the sand.
Winter cold cut the air
Hanging still ev’ry where
Dressed in grey
Did he say hold my hand?
. . .
We’re just Ships that pass in the night
And we smile and we say “it’s all right”
We’re still here.
It’s just that we’re out of si-i-ight
Like those ships that pass in the night.
Then there’s 80’s TV show drek:
Believe it or not, I’m walking on air
I never thought I could feel so fre-e-e
Flying away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it’s just me.
And, of course, Dan Fogelberg: The Leader of the Band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my so-o-ul
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man.
I’m just a living legacy
To the Leader of the Band.
And neither last nor least, Callin’ out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer’s here and the time is right
For Dancin’ in the Street
CJ
Who is taking the 5th about how much of this stuff she’s actually played and/or sung
SV (I feel we are close enough to go by nickname, 'K?) -
Stevie may (or not) be a genius, but ‘Sunshine’ is DRECK. Period. End of discussion.
CJ can we leave showtunes out of this? thank you.
and be sure to thank Pete Wingfield for Eighteen with a Bullet:
I’m eighteen with a bullet
Got my finger on the trigger, I’m gonna pull it
Yes I will
Be my A-side, baby, be beside me
Right now, right now I’m a single
But pretty soon you’ll see
We’ll have a hit first time
And won’t be long we’ll find
That we’re raising a whole L.P.
Woo-hoo"
Kids! do NOT try this at home - Dreck is best handled by trained professionals
[sub]Who’s making love
To your old lady
While you’re out making love…[/sub]
Time Passages was NOT Cat Stevens - it was Al Stewart, the same guy who did the drecky Year Of The Cat.
That said, let’s get on to more dreck:
Well I never been to heaven
But I’ve been to Oklahoma
Woah they tell me I was born there
But I really don’t remember
In Oklahoma, not Arizona
What does it matter
What does it matter
Woah I never been to Spain
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
And they sure know how to use it
They don’t abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can’t refuse it, woah
Sometimes, in the morning,
When shadows are deep,
I lie here beside you,
Just watching you sleep,
And sometimes I wonder,
What I’m thinking of,
My cup runneth over with love…
I have something I’m going to ponder on my drive home tonight. Exactly how many of the songs listed in this thread do I like? Off the top of my head, there are at least 10 (probably closer to 30) nominees listed so far that I really enjoy, even though I will concede they are dreck.
I wonder if anyone else will fess up to liking of these tunes or have caught themselves humming Afternoon Delight for some unexplained reason.
I’m up on a tightwire
One side’s ice and one is fire
It’s a circus game with you and me
I’m up on a tight rope
One side’s hate and one is hope
But the top hat on my head is all you see
And the wire seems to be the only place for me
A comedy of errors and I’m falling
Like a rubber neck giraffe you look into my past
Well maybe you’re just too blind to, see
Life’s Been Good was not done by the Eagles - it was a solo effort by Joe Walsh.
In the meantime: (and I’m sitting here picturing Heathen’s face as she reads these drecky lyrics… and laughing my ass off…)
Man’s got his woman to take his seed
Man’s got the power oh
She’s got the need
She spends her life through
Pleasing up her man
She feeds him dinner or
Anything she can
She cries alone at night too often
He smokes, drinks and don’t come home at all.
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed.
(Alice Cooper/Dick Wagner)
"If I could make a wish,
I think I’d pass.
Can’t think of anything I need -
Making love with you
Has left me peaceful, warm, and tired.
What more could I ask?
There’s nothing left to be desired.
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak.
So sleep, silent angel, go to sleep.
Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe and to love you.
All I need is the air that I breathe, yes, to love you.
All I need is the air that I breathe.
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound,
Nothing to eat, no books to read…"
Heathen: My apologies for the assumption…but seeing as I am a straight married male and am known for hugging both male and female friends - I never renege on a hug offer
Now…on to the dreck:
Hey girl I’ll bet you
There’s someone out to get you
You’ll find him anywhere; on a bus, in a bar, in a grocery store
He’ll say “Excuse me, haven’t I seen you somewhere before?”
Rap-a-rap-a-rap
They call him the rapper
Rap, rap, rap you know what he’s after.
So he starts his rappin’
Hopin’ something will happen
He’ll say he needs you, a companion, a girl he can talk to
He’s made up his mind, he needs someone to sock it to.
Rap-a-rap-a-rap
They call him the rapper
Rap, rap, rap you know what he’s after.
“Oh, goodbye cruel world, I’m off to join the circus
Gonna be a broken-hearted clown
Paint my face with a good-for-nothin’ smile
'cause a mean, fickle woman turned my whole world upside down…”
ai! you guys have now officially jumped the shark. neither leon russell or joe walsh’s tunes are dreck. dreck is: bobby goldsboro, bread, ohio express, edward bear, et al. any old song you can remember the lyrics to DOESNT COUNT. you are reaching way too far.
foe example: these two gems from tavares and gary wright, respectively. (lord, i hope these havent been done!)\
heaven
must be missing an angel
missing one angel, child
cuz yer here with me
right now (YECCH)
dreeeeeeeaaaaam weaver
i believe you can get me through the NI-HIGHT
trivia: what mediocre seventies band was gary wright in before the immortality of ‘dream weaver’?
or this one, from the CUTEST BOY IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
i think i love you
isnt that what im afraid of
afraid that im not sure of
a love there is no CURE FOR
again, apologies if these have been done. i’ll have to find the lists and print them out. there’s more, people. you don’t have to plunder the real artists, just the sears artists.
