If Newington Seceds from New Hampshire...?

I worked with a guy from Scottsbluff, NE (The Sugar Beet Capital of the Midwest) and he said that there are people there who want the whole Nebraska panhandle to join Wyoming because Cheyenne is much more accessible than Lincoln. I’m no longer in touch with this guy, so maybe a Doper could try to find proof of his claims. If it happens, we’ll finally be able to tell Colorado from Wyoming.

Right - the state with the annual oil dividend for all its constituents. “We won’t pay for children’s schooling in NH, but heck, if you wanna give us some money for all the oil that gets drilled on the other side of the continent, we won’t complain.”

Constitutionally, there are precedents. Maine used to be part of Massachussetts, and West Virginia used to be part of Virginia.

If Newington succeeded in seceding, and could not convince any other state to annex it, the federal government would probably incorporate it as a U.S. Territory, like Guam or the Virgin Islands. If the Newingtonians are mad at New Hampshire, imagine how they would like to have the Feds running everything!

Oh, but the power plant is a great thing for them finacially, though. Because of it, they were paying less than $3/1,000 in property taxes. The state-wide one is $6.??/1,000 so since they are paying more than they were when property taxes were just collected by the town(or is it a city?) they’re a “donor town.”
