Apparently your image of California is based on watching Baywatch. For you information in many parts of California there is snow on the ground for several months of the year. In San Francisco locals get a laugh out of seeing the tourists freezing their butts off in their shorts during the summer. Anyone wishing to see hats for warmth in California need only turn on the TV to watch a San Francisco 49rs game being broadcast from 3Com park (at Candlestick Point.) You’ll think you’re watching a Packers game it gets so cold there. We went to a A’s/Giants exhibition game one early April there and it was actually called in the 7th inning because it started to snow. ---

I don’t wear a hat in the winter. I live in San Francisco and I almost always wear some kind of headcovering when I am outside. In the summer, I favor something with a big brim to protect me from the sun, and in the winter it’s usually a scarf with a built in hood (I get bad earaches if my ears get too cold). Note to those who are bald on top (and even those who aren’t): one of my good friends, who has only a small bald spot, recently discovered that he had developed skin cancer there. Fortunately it was discovered early and removed completely, but he is never golfing again without a hat. ---
