If not America, who would you like to be The Superpower?

Polynesia being a french territory, it doesn’t receive any “foreign aid”…It receive monetary transfers, but these aren’t included in foreign aid any more than the money granted to some french town or region…

Europe taking a big slice  . Are you refering to eastern Europe? What kind of aid are you talking about? I assumed we were refering to aid given to develloping countries.

Hmmm. Somebody already suggested it. I would add that having the “seat of power” be one that freezes your butt off might be an appropriate deterent for our would-be masters. Also, since most governments are in the dark most of the time anyway, at least for six months of the year the setting would be fitting.

Do the foreign aid figures include 50,000 U.S. soldiers protecting South Korea? Or military aid in general?

Good point, Sam Stone. I mean, the US is paying for its military presence in these countries (although I do know some countries help logistically and all). Is this taken into account when “amount of foreign aid” is calculated?

I was expecting this comment since it’s every time the same thing :

American Poster : The US gives plenty of money in foreign aid

Me (or someone else) : Nope. It doesn’t (cite)

American Poster : OK, fine. But we spend plenty of money protecting people with our armies.

Once again, if your argument is that the US spend money on its military, refer to the military spendings, not to foreign aid. Because elsewhere you appear like that :
Clueless American Poster : We’re the most generous in the world . I’ve no clue what we may give nor what other countries my give, but I just know we must be the most generous since we’re americans and anyway all my neighbors think the same.

Non American Poster : generous, my ass! You’re the most stingy bastards around!

Clueless American Poster : Oops! Let’s find something else…We’re the most…oh ! yes, we spend the most money on our military, and that’s only to protect your sorry asses, because if it wasn’t for your well being, sure as hell we wouldn’t spend a dime on our military to protect our interests.

In case you didn’t notice, this kind of argument irritates me. Especially after the 200th rehersal, on essentially every american message board I can think of (do you have a ministery of foreign aid propaganda, or what?) . Actually, this was the topic of my very first post on this board, and the arguments were already the same : “we spent more money than anybody else on foreign aid (and you still owe us the WWI loans)” “No, you don’t” “We’ll…perhaps we don’t but we spend money to protect you
So, argue as much as you want on military spendings and on how they benefit other countries, but live with it : you don’t give that much in the way of foreign aid, especially when considering the US wealth. And having a lot of carriers doesn’t change this fact.

That’s a WAG, but I doubt it, since figures about foreign aid often come from international organizations which are interested development, not in military spendings. I know that the figures given in the french page I linked actually refered to “devellopment aid”, and the CIA factbook figures refers to “economic aid”. So, at least these figures don’t seem to include military aid, let alone the cost of troops stationned overseas.

Belize… where the hell is that?

I think it’s somewhere near British Honduras.

To return to the OP, I nominate Liechtenstein.

Yes!!!

(you expected me to say Australia, din’cha?)

NZ in charge would be the coolest. Australia would do an okay job of it, but we Aussies do have a tendency to be a little self-righteous when given a bit of power. Not only that, but we wouldn’t be Australian without being the underdog. Give global power to the Kiwis, and we’d still have an opportunity to complain. Actually, we’d love that. Sydney’s New York to Auckland’s Washington. Bloody cool.

Go the Sheep Shaggers!
ICE WOLF FOR PRESIDENT!

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Develolopment is made up of 22 industrialized nations who have agreed to a .07% GNP as a basis for their financial assistance in underdeveloped countries. So far no one has maintained this level. AND the US is worst of all but still manages more than double practically everyone but Japan.
The figures are found in the reports given

by the Development Assistance Committee. These charts ODA show how much from whom and where the $$ goes.

and BTW French Polynesia was top priority for France in foreign aid $$ http://www.oecd.org/gif/M000000000/M00000280.gif

Granted the US could and should do better. Damn, what part of that have you misunderstood…the OP wasn’t a bitch about US foreign policy. But, anyone claiming the US hasn’t done anything for human rights or assistance to the needy is just ignorant. Should we do more? maybe>probably (funny how people want stuff from you, but to hell with you the rest of the time)

I guarantee I have given more than MY share, I’m not rich but I do what I can. Most of the people (that I know) in the US are like this. We work hard and just want to be happy…the shit that goes on in many of these 3rd world nations is a combination of politics and big business, not WE THE PEOPLE. Listening to some, you’d think Americans were a bunch of fucking gangsters. Sorry to dissappoint you…I wish we could get rid of all the SOBs perverting the good will. Do I think France has this good will? hmm, not sure…beside they were excluded from the OP.

As far as “clueless American poster” if that’s supposed to be a dig then F*@ OFF, you see what you want to see. I read the reports, I keep track of GOV. spending, have family members in the field and have spent A LOT of f**ing time doing charity work and have worked in some underdeveloped countries and seen the good and the bad in regards to aid.

It’s a rotten situation, some worse than others, some not so bad. All could be improved…really didn’t want to get into a long winded post. But don’t assume to know me, you don’t have a clue.
But, I still love ya anyway
The question was who besides the US…my answer AUSTRALIA.

and PS…the CIA as a reliable source?

Peace

Ok. Your cite give more accurate, detailled and up to date infos than the other references I used. I withdraw my comments.
Beside, this site is extremely interesting…

Yeah, but Jewish tradition doesn’t tell you a golem’s Armor Class or Hit Dice!

And the Lord said “Let there be golems, with an armor class of 3 and a hit dice of 4d8+4” And the Lord saw that it was good.

Everyone is missing the obvious. What is now the world’s approximate 10th largest economy(I sincerely hope I’m remember ing this correctly) , was formerly an independent nation that made the mistake of joining another, and was prevented from reverting to it’s status as a Republic?

Come on, the answer is obvious. TEXAS should be the world’s next superpower!!!

California? Hawai’i?
:: d&r ::

Agreed. New Zealand it is, with Wolfie as the bigwig. I think she’ll need some astute Aussie advisors though, don’t you, TLD

4d8+4 ?!? That’s the wimpiest golem I’ve ever seen! Even a lowly Flesh Golem has 40 hit points! (49 hit points in 3rd Edition)

Just look at the comparable size of the map. United States of Europe, or People’s Republic of China.

All others, Superpower wannabes
