I was wondering if I post a thread that tanks (which they usually do), is ok to post something to it so it will back on top?

I believe one bump is within board parameters.

Hi and welcome! I’m not a moderator, but I saw a mod post about this once. What you are wanting to do is called “bumping” your thread. It’s OK to bump a thread once but only once, if I’m remembering correctly.

The forum ATMB (About This Message Board) has lots of useful info in it.

> If you start a thread, and after a while think you would like more comments on it, you may be tempted to “bump” the thread by adding a post to make the thread reappear back at the top of the forum list. We strongly discourage this practice, but since the boards are so busy sometimes a single “bump” will bring about good results. Our guidelines:
>
> [ul][li]Wait until a suitable time has elapsed (at least until your thread is no longer visible on the first page of the forum)[/li][li]Bump your thread only once[/li][li]Do not make a habit of always bumping each of your threads.[/li][/ul]
>
> When you bump your thread, it is preferrable to include additional information relevant to the original post, which may help encourage posters to respond.

This is from [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=106617) over in About This Message Board, like **John Carter of Mars** mentioned (about a third of the way down). Lots of pertinent guidelines and such in that thread.

Oh yeah, welcome.

Thanks. Would it be ok to “bump” again if there are a couple of posts to a thread in between?

First of all, I’m not a moderator, so don’t take my word as gospel.

I think bumping really only refers to blatant resuscitation attempts of otherwise dead threads. There’s no limit to how many times you can post in your own thread, so long as you’re, you know, _conversing._ If you’re only posting to bump the thread up again, the administration frowns on that. They allow it once because sometimes it’s needed, but they frown on it beyond that.

In other words, if you’re responding to other posters, you can do that to your heart’s content, but you only get one “Come on, people, look at me!” post.

What if you just like talking to yourself? I do it all the time myself when offline, out loud, but usually when alone. 😉

What if someone has multiple personalities? Or would posting under multiple personalities be considered a violation of the rules - i.e. more than one person using the same username?

Anyhoo…

What about someone with multiple personalities posting under a different username for each personality? Would that be a violation of the rules?

Anyhoo…

Roland, is that you? If so, you lose points for not mentioning [Allnurses.com](http://Allnurses.com).
