Late:The main issue with piracy is they were not flagged ships (registered), so no country could claim them. To prevent that, they applied to concept of universal jurisdiction since piracy was everyone’s problem. But a pirate is a very specific thing and doesn’t just apply to anything in international waters.

How seriously “flagged” does a ship have to be? I assume those Somali speedboat pirates were about as Somali-flagged as a speedboat from a relatively anarchic country can get.

Somewhere I got the idea the fire came from a C-130 gunship.

I saw some other discussion where people who presumably “know their s….stuff” identified the attack weapons (specific aircraft and what type of weapons they carry) based on the shape of the visible cross-hairs of each video.

It just means registered. Like you’d register your car. Pretty much all boats can and should be registered.

Drug runners don’t do that. I imagine it’s the same for Somali pirates.
