If the election is stolen in favor of Trump and the courts rule in his favor, do the Democrats just quietly hand over the keys?

Thank you! The mathing part of my brain was taking a holiday yesterday.

That’s like the purported sect that frowns on sex, because it might lead to dancing. If the court throws out the election and seats a dictator, and the military backs that, that’s not something that can lead to a military coup; that is a military coup.

But then, of course, it’s meaningless to say that “the military would side with SCOTUS”, because which SCOTUS? States would have to take positions on the coup, and any states that sided with the coup, the remaining states would be declared to be in rebellion, and their legislators unseated. The remaining members of Congress would impeach the traitorous Supreme Court justices, and Biden would appoint new ones. Both courts would, of course, claim to be legitimate, and would, of course, issue opposing decisions on the outcome of the election. Now, which one do the members of the military follow?

Sounds like the American version of the Papal Schism.

The other - much more minor - aspect of the situation is that after four years of criticizing Republicans for saying “Stop the Steal,” it would now be Democrats who would be saying, “Stop the Steal!”

The difference would be that the Ds would be trying to stop a real steal while the Rs were trying to stop a not-real steal, but a large portion of the populace won’t see the difference.

That’s the problem with unprecedented times. We really can’t predict what will happen, because all the old rules will already be broken. What will happen will depend more on the character of the people involved.

Sure it will; the Right is hostile to the majority of the nation’s population. And Trump himself would love how “powerful” it let him feel. And the military will go along with it once the leadership had been purged and replaced with Trump thugs. The fascists will be flattening entire cities full of “liberals” and “inferior races” if and when they really get going.

Such people have never had any problem with massacres.

Correct. What was that case where a city block was firebombed because of black activists? Oh, yeh: Maybe not a whole city block [ETA: correction: two city blocks], but it was the MOVE bombing in 1985.

It’s not like situations where there are two different leadership groups, each claiming the other is illegitimate, are rare in human history.

Would the election necessarily go to the House? The Constitution requires a majority of the total number of "electors*, so if any states fail to send in electoral votes, implying that no Electors have been legally chosen from those states, then surely only a majority of the votes cast is required.

Also it is Congress’ duty to declare the results, not the courts’. So whatever the SCOTUS may rule, is that binding on Congress?

Make no mistake there’s an old saying “a dog that brings a bone will carry one”
Trump is going to try and steal this election. Something
just seems weird or I have severe trust issues- these Maggots have probably got their people in place for a coup. This election in 2024 is very stressful for those of us who want to maintain democracy while alot of these rotten to the root politicians are willing to put ropes around our necks for “power”. Whats next if the republic survives? Dont be surprised if racist states like Texas and/or Florida pledge to succeed from the union or make a play for succession. I wouldn’t put it past any of these former Confederate states I put Nothing passed them and I’m thoroughly convinced that although I was Naive thinking that The Race Problem was starting do sunset, it was Only lying dormant, onl wow!

Interesting op-ed from The Fulcrum, where an Amherst College professor, Austin Sarat, argues that Harris should not hand over power if Trump wins.

Sarat argues that the threat that a 2nd Trump term poses to the Constitution and America is too great to let Trump just take power as if it’s merely a normal presidential election like any other. He doesn’t go into detail, though, as to how exactly this should be done.
