if you ate an uncooked popcorn kernel, would it pop inside you?

quote:Speaking of feeding chickens uncommon things then cooking them. When my wife was a little girl her mother kept a chicken as a pet. The chicken was fed sesame seeds. One day the chicken got out and was attacked by a dog and killed. Being a good farm girl my mother in law cooked the chicken. My wife says the chicken had the most amazing hint of sesame flavor.
That is amazing!!! I so want to try that one day!!!

Yes, meat from all animals is flavored by the animal’s diet. There is a difference in grain fed and grass fed beef, and one of the chicken giants (Perdue?) brags about feeding their chickens marigolds.

What I want to know though from all the talk about cooking the birds who have eaten unpopped popcorn… don’t you guys normally gut your bird before cooking?

… but it will never work another day in its life. All it will do is sit in the boat and drink beer.

The boiling point of water depends on the pressure of the environment it is in. At sea level the boiling point is around 100 C. At higher elevations, where the air pressure is lower, the boiling point can be significantly lower. In a pressure cooker the boiling point is higher. Water cannot boil at all in a sealed vessel - for example, water inside a hollow steel sphere would not boil at 600 C as long as there were no leaks.

Given all of this, there is nothing special about a microwave oven that causes it to heat water just to the boiling point. Liquid water cannot be any hotter than boiling no matter where the heat comes from - any water molecules that are at a higher temperature will become steam. Water that is trapped in an unpopped kernel will continue to absorb microwave energy without boiling as long as the kernel is intact. The water temperature will go past 100 C under these conditions, and will continue to get hotter by absorbing microwave energy until the kernel walls can’t take the pressure any more (at around 180 C). It is only at this point, when the kernel pops, that the water inside it will turn to steam.

Water at 600C would become a supercritical fluid which is neither a liquid nor a gas.

There is one scenario where you could pop a popcorn in your stomach, popcorn kernels continue popping as much as 15 seconds after you turn off the heat so if you immediately grabbed the right unpopped kernel, swallowed as quickly as possible, ignoring the burning in your mouth, it may, if you’re lucky, pop in your stomach.

I doubt this: the corn would cool as it goes through your mouth and throat, and rapidly cool to 37 C as it entered the acids in your stomach.

The corn pops, not because of any increase in temperature/pressure, but due to the weakening structural integrity of the hull. If you swallowed quickly enough, it wouldn’t have sufficient time to cool completely before the hull fails.

TMI answer: Don’t eat anything after you eat the popcorn. Keep checking your shit until you run out of shit. If you didn’t find any unpopped (thus undigestable) kernels in your shit by then, that means they popped and were digested.
