> As I understand it, the people who discovered and settled Tasmania were not well-up on things zoological: finding a native predatory mammal with stripes, the first comparison-fodder they thought of _was_ tigers, rather than wolves. Though I gather that there’s a doleful ballad, orginating from the first convicts sent to Tasmania, about their miseries there – including their being obliged to sleep out in the open, and thus make big fires

The people who discover and settled Tasmania were the Tasmanians. You’re talking about he pale-skinned invades who came later. The same ones who called the Koala a “bear”. 😉

Knee-jerk caucaso-anglophone-centric prejudice acknowledged, and apologised for :smack: .

I was saddened at the news yesterday that the Sumatran (white) rhino is now extinct in the wild. Although there are still specimens in zoos, for purposes of this posting, I’m ignoring that and voting for the white rhino to be brought back…before it’s completely and utterly too late.

It’s not extinct, so it doesn’t need to be “brought back”. There is an effort in place already to re-introduce it back into the wild, and it can already be said to be existing in semi-wild conditions. It’s just that, at this stage, just letting them run wild would ensure their extinction.

Nitpick on a nitpick. The people who discovered and settled Tasmania were the Parlevar.
