But just think – I believe you can interface your smartphone to your Nest, and thereby possibly screw things up so badly that the thermostat will never work right again. You cannot underestimate the power of the kind of “smart” technology that allows me to hit a simple unintended keystroke and get my entire Word document scrambled beyond recognition – indeed, such is the power of modern “smart” digital technology that with any luck you might even be able to set your house on fire!

When the installers were done, one of them asked me for my wi-fi code in order to hook up my NEST to the internet. I told him I wanted no such thing. He looked at me like I had grown a third eyeball in the middle of my forehead.

“But you can program your settings from your phone! You can control your thermostat when you’re away via the internet!”

Uh, yeah. Right. I have no desire whatsoever to have my thermostat connected to the internet, and of course (since that’s the focus of this thread), I don’t have a smartphone.

I’ll take another look. But I think I jimmied around with every setting or option available from the menu and came up blank.

I’m sure I never set up a “schedule” for it. I just manually set it at what I want. For example, last night around 9:00 I reset the temp down a few notches and it said “until 11:15.” WTF? And sure enough when I wake up in the morning, it’s back at the original temp. If I set it later at night (say, after midnight), it will say “until 6:30.” Dammit, just do want I tell you to do!

You could ebay your Nest and just grab a screwdriver and replace it with something like this one : Honeywell Home RTH3100C1002 Digital Non-Programmable Heat/Cool Pump Thermostats - Amazon.com

I think if the technology had taken a different evolutionary tack, I’d have been an early adopter instead of a foot-dragging luddite, though: if I could buy a device the size of a cellphone that would run MacOS X (the real one) and I could plop it into a cradle at my desk and it would connnect to my full-sized monitors, keyboard, mouse, printer, external hard drives, etc, and it was the only device I needed and would run FileMaker and Photoshop and compile code and run virtual machine environments containing Windows and Linux (and, of course, would have a bloody #^@!@ file system with, you know, folders and files and stuff) but when uncradled would behave more or less like an android or iPhone, sure, I’d have one. But I don’t want my digital life sprawled across two different environments.

Smart phones still seem to me to be like 8 track tapes or SyQuest cartridges: an interim technology that is transparently not the final one for its niche because of all its limitations. I’ll admit they do some cool things though.
