For yesterday’s puzzle, β€œfinlet” is not a nonsense word β€” it exists. I’ve never seen Connections use a fake word. It’s just obscure to most people and, as you said, for that reason a giveaway, like you said. When a rare word appears, it almost always is not being used for its meaning (though I seem to remember once a word I’d consider uncommon being used literally.) ---

Yeah, I’ve just started playing this, and this one was easy. I saw that one of the words was Downing, and I could only think of one category that could be in, and sure enough there were three other words that fit. And once you’ve got one word, it makes the rest combinatorically easier.
