Oh yeah, they’re Muppets. Sesame Street is where the Muppets got famous (Kermit got his start on another old variety show–can’t remember which one, though. Maybe PRNYouth knows?)

I would be right along with **Democritus** and heckle everyone. Although in real life I do this in front of the people I heckle always hoping they will understand that I’m just teasing.

Kermit’s genesis was on the show _Sam and Friends_, but that was before he was clearly identified as a frog. For most (all?) of the show’s run, he lacked the “collar” of light green pointy stuff around his neck and was just a lizardy-thing.

As I preview this, I notice that **Juniper200** beat me to it, but I’ll post anyway. A pre-frog Kermit got his start on a program called _Sam and Friends_ Jim Henson did on a DC-area station. Kermit was _sans_ the nifty pointed collar, and often lip-synched to records with a very different voice, but it was his start in show-business. Sesame Street was his big break, though. What I’m not sure of is how early he was identified as a frog on Sesame Street. He was clearly a frog by 1972, though, when he starred in _The Frog Prince_. (Robin was the prince, not Kermit, but Kermit was still clearly a frog.) What you may have been thinking of, **Persephone** , was Rowlf the Dog, who was the first Muppet to receive national exposure, and that was on the old Jimmy Dean variety show.

Gonzo’s girlfriend was _Camilla_ the Chicken. There wasn’t much mention of her in the recent _Muppets From Space_, though. I suspect _ **fowl** _ play. 🙂

Another vote for Fozzy, I sympathise with him trying gamely even though he was the worst comic with the worst jokes, he always plugged away…either that or Link Hearthrob…I always wonder if William Shatner recognized himself…

I was trying to remember her name, too, but it was escaping me.
Oh, IMHO, the opening scene from _Muppets from Space_ is one of the all-time best pieces of Muppet choreography, ever.

You do realize that half the characters you people are mentioning are not Muppets, but Sesame Street. They are not the same thing.

How are they not the same?? The OP is not referring to “The Muppet Show” specifically. Muppets are found on “Sesame Street”, “The Muppet Show” and its various movies, “Fraggle Rock”, etc. Most are the ‘half-bodied, wires-from-below-connected-to-the-arms’ puppets that we know and love. Others like Sweetums, Big Bird, and Snuffletc. are full costumed charaters, but still fall under the generic ‘Muppet’ heading (the trademark/copyright symbol eludes me). (When the Muppet 3D attraction was slated to open at Disney MGM, [around the time of Jim Henson’s death, IIRC], there was quite a uproar regarding trademarks and rights and definition of “muppet” between the Henson Corporation and Disney.)
A Sesame Street muppet character is still a Muppet.
A Fraggle Rock muppet character is still a Muppet.

I think I relate to Ernie more than any other Muppet–I even laugh like him sometimes when I’ve done something rather sneaky! Plus, I have a shirt just like his! Also, I detailed it [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=16258&pagenumber=2) before but my favorite Muppet still has to be the weasel from _Muppet Classic Fairy Tales_–sometimes I feel like him/her!
