# If you're going to have WiFi at your business, make it fucking work

I very much appreciate businesses that provide Wifi for customers. Particularly restaurants. Nothing I like more than a leisurely lunch with some iPad surfing. It’s half the reason i patronize many places. So for god’s sake, make your fucking network useable!
It should not be a four step process involving pop ups to log on.
The password, if you have one, should not be fiFT33ncharacTer$1 with stupid number replacements and random caps.
The password should be KNOWN to all who work there. I don’t want to hear, “Oh, em… Bob knows it, but he’s not in today…”
I should not have to re-log on after 30 minutes or whatever.
It should not block me from using sites in a mad zeal to make absolutely certain I’m not viewing porn. I’ve had too many news articles not work.
It should be faster than dial-up from 1995.
It’s thoughtful of you to have it. I’ll keep giving you my business, but make it a real amenity, not an afterthought. Thanks.

Or when I try to log in with my iPhone, just gives me the spinning wheel and never logs me on. Or keeps knocking me off my favorite game.
Get with the times. Good rant. The employees not knowing the password is a good one.

Employees not knowing the password is pathetic.
But, how much are you willing to see prices increase for the business to be able to handle 15 - 25 - 35 wireless devices connecting to their wireless network and having it run lightening fast?

How much were we willing to pay to have all restaurants have functioning bathrooms?
We’re reaching the point where Wi-Fi is just as important to customers as toilets. Bandwidth is just like electricity and running water - a precondition for running a business.

What kills me is when my device finds and joins a network which then requires payment or logging in or some other human attention before I can actually USE it, which then prevents it from just using the cell network like it was doing just a second ago. It’s like falling into a pothole.

No, we’re not. At least not to most customers. Are there really this many people with slow connections and/or limited data plans?

Yeah, we are. I most definitely factor WiFi into places I patronize. With restaurants, it’s #2 behind the food. I hate using my phone for connectivity.

I am frankly amazed people actually use the public wifi! It’s like using a public toilet, you don’t want to unless you absolutely have to.
Unlimited data, that’s the way to go.

I’ll choose a lunch spot that has less than stellar food but offers good wifi over delicious food and no connection most days because I usually have to work during lunch.

I’ve been a total slut for public WiFi for years. How is this putting me at risk? To my knowledge, I’ve never had a security issue. What would it take for a nefarious person to cause me harm while using my iPad on the MCDonalds WiFi?

Don’t block a double handful of ports and protocols and leave customers with nothing but web connectivity. Not everyone who wants internet wants it in order to use a web browser, dammit.

The problem with security issues is that you [generally _don’t_ know](http://www.howtogeek.com/178696/why-using-a-public-wi-fi-network-can-be-dangerous-even-when-accessing-encrypted-websites/) about them.
