Got on my bell bottoms and my trendy peacoat, but then I’m in the Navy, so that’s pretty normal. But off duty, Ima wearin’ a Nehru jacket and a peace symbol (that my girlfriend’s brother gave me) on a leather tether around my neck (wore the latter all through my Vietnam tour). I’d really like to participate in all that free love being handed out, but young women aren’t much interested in a guy with short hair and carrying a military ID. ::sigh:: ---

There’s no chance of finding a nickel bag any more, is there? (Ahhh, the good ol’ days… a baggie for five bucks, though there was zero quality control. Might be super-potent stuff, or laced with god knows what, or the most expensive oregano you ever bought) ---

I retired seven months ago and I am no longer subject to random drug screenings. I have not decided what to do about this but I did call the guy who was my source for pretty good refer in the old days. He is still around and told me to stop by anytime. I do not imaging a sandwich bag full is still going to be five bucks though. ---

We skipped haircuts, and wore desert boots, and listened to jazz and read books published be Grove Press. Beatniks who didn’t live in big cities didn’t have any real hangouts, and if you lived in a place like Mobile, probably didn’t even know another beatnik to read bad blank verse to. Beat was more of an internalized thing, whereas Hippiedom seemed like it had to be shared. ---

That makes sense. We used to call those goatee guys “Too cool for school”. But there was a communal spirit in some of the basement music/poetry/free food joints. We even had some in Milwaukee, but you’re right, the real places were on the coasts. I’ve read a lot about **The Hungry i** and a lot of Beats would’ve gone hungry if not for the 25¢ “folk music and all-you-can-eat stew” nights.
