Today I got fingerprinted. I sent in my application weeks ago, the references are in, and on Friday I have **my first job as a substitute teacher!** I’m going to be subbing at the school my mom works at- it’s a school for mentally retarded kids. I’ve done extensive volunteering there and most of the staff has watched me grow up, so it’s not like I’m on unfamiliar territory. All the same, it’s an entirely different feeling than all of the volunteering I’ve done. There will always be at least one aide if not more in class with me, so I’m not on my own. And I don’t get to hand out detentions and be a petty dictator, but I’ll live. My first job is with the preschoolers. I’m a class C substitute. I’m excited. 🆒 ---

I’m actually going to be able to sub for most any teacher in the building, which means that I’m going to be working with anyone from preschool to age 21. My mother works with 18-21 year olds, so that’s what I know best, but I’ve done time with the little ones. And I don’t mind changing diapers, so I’m ideal for the job. ---

My dad has said that being a substitute is a thankless job, because the kids want to try to distract them and have a fun day. I think you will be equal to the task, however, because I think you have a dynamic and interesting enough personality to keep their attention and actually teach them something. ---

Good Luck **andygirl**. It takes a special person to work with those kids. My wife teaches high-school age TMR (Trainably Mentally Retarded - an insulting label if there ever was one) kids and every day I have more and more respect for her. It sounds like the kids are going to be lucky to have you as a sub. ---

Hey, sounds great! I substitute often when I’m not busy working more full-time-type jobs. I’ve got to say that one of the proudest days of my life was when my fingerprint results came in, and I got a letter from the FBI asserting that I was not a mother raping, father stabbing, father raping, hairy-eye-ball criminal, and that I in fact was not currently being hunted down for any specific crime against humanity.
