Do you have a GFI receptacle on the outlet nearest the sink? I know it is code in Canada (any outlet within 3 ft, IIRC) and I’m pretty sure you don’t want to get fried if you accidentally drop the toaster in the sink… 
This house was originally built in 1934, and the latest addition was decades ago. Knob-and-tube wiring, fusebox… The new cabinets/counter are not near the sink.
I’d love to bring the house to code, but I’m guessing it would be hideously expensive.
