The OP took an odd approach, but I have noticed we’ve recently had a whole slew of newbies claiming intractable personal problems with varying degrees of believability. How did we turn into the Dear Snarky Abby of the internet? And more importantly, what can we do to stop this influx of nuttery? ---

Sometimes I think “woe is me” threads are NOT helpful. At least, not when the OPers are unsympathetic folks who come across as trolls. They make it that much harder for the next “woe is me” poster to garner sympathy and understanding. I consider myself a fairly compassionate person. I always try to offer something helpful to posters who seem to come from a pathetic, lonely place. But sometimes I can’t take it anymore. Whenever I get to that point, I stop participating in the thread. But then I find it harder to feel anything for the next internet sadsack I come across. Compassion fatigue is a real thing. That said, I don’t really find people with perfect lives to be all that interesting. I tend to like posters who reveal their vulnerabilities and insecurities more than those who act like their shit don’t stink. I just don’t want to be constantly reminded of their imperfections. ---
