I'm bored, I have money, and I have time. Any hot games out there?

Halo on XBox handles (and always has handled) 16 player online play. (I think it actually supports 32 players, but I have personally played it with 16, so I can only guarantee 16.) I’m not sure why you think it only handles 4-player, other than the fact it doesn’t support XBox Live. But, you don’t need XBox Live to play any XBox game online. They all still work. I’ve played massive Halo online multiplayer, some Project Gotham 2 online multiplayer, and I’ve never bothered to spend the $ to get XBox Live.

Just sayin…

hehheh, the 16 player online games on the XBox hauled ass, with no hardware requirement other than a broadband connection and an XBox.

And yes, they took out coop for the PC version.

Except for the regenerating shield, the 2-weapon limitation, and the vehicles, of course.

I went back and read some reviews of Halo when it first came out, and one review cited the 2-weapon limitation as a drawback. I laughed (now) when I read that, because nowadays I feel that’s one of the greatest features of the game. It forces you into strategic and tactical decisions, which is always a good thing.

But I think everybody loves the shield. Never again shall you wander around with 1 hit point praying for a health pack while running away from everything. You’re always ready to fight.

Damn, I think I wanna go do the jeep run during maintenance…

Have to admit: I was a little underwhelmed with Far Cry. I think the setting and graphics are a great step up, but the gameplay just wasn’t that exciting and, of course, the story blew. I didn’t find the AI all that impressive, and it’s glitchy in just the way that makes it often annoying no matter how good. The game REALLY needs what No One Lives Forever 2 implemented: a “hidden” GUI that lets you know when you are properly concealed. Sneaking up on grunts is not easy, and you often fail for unknown reasons when they suddenly catch on to your prescence. In addition, even with all the options and weapons, the gameplay doesn’t really throw that much interesting stuff at you that’s new or creative. The MP isn’t all that great.

That said, it’s a solid FPS, one of the best in awhile. You will be having some great battles from time to time, and there is lots to explore. And, if you have a decent system, oggle at. But me, I’ll wait for Doom3 and HL2 to get some real “next-gen” action/graphics on.

There are two Far Cry demos out that you can download and try though, so give those a shot before buying. They aren’t quite what the full game offers, but they are a fair representation of what you’re going to get.

I think Unreal2K4 or whatever you want to call it is the real “new school” FPS buy to have currently. Onslaught is the absolute bomb, and you’ll get tons of MP fun out of this game. It’s really well put together, works without a hitch, and while I’ve never really liked or gotten used to the Unreal universe weapons as much as other big name FPS games, the vehicles maps and game designs really make it fun.

I also second Natural Selection, the free mod for Half-Life (well, nowadays, for Steam too). It’s probably the best FPS MP teamplay game out there: at least in classic mode you HAVE to play as a team (a mic is a real feature) or else you’re screwed. It’s very “deep” as FPS games go, in part because it’s built with RTS-style games as an inspiration, with the marine team having a commander with a top down RTS view commanding his troops, building structures, teching up, etc. The maps are fantastic, the gameplay is suspenseful and very story-like (impressive for any FPS MP game) with all sorts of final stands and footholds and sneak attacks and such. And if you don’t like the RTS framework, there’s now a new combat mode that’s fast and a blast where you can spend team kills on upgrades to evolve to higher lifeforms, abilities, and/or equipment. The price (even if you don’t yet own Half-Life) is ultra-cheap, the system requirements laughably low so they have a wide user base, and for all that it actually looks fairly decent (it’s somewhat upgraded from HL1 days): while you won’t get the shiny bells and whistles of newer games, the graphics are solid, artistic, and won’t detract from the action or the atmosphere.

Oh, and SP Halo, at least on PC where I played it, was awesome cept for one painful thing: the indoor level design. It’s there that it really shows its console weakness: far too many indentical sections of room and cooridor, all lifeless and blocky and downright dull. Given how lush and wonderful the outdoor scenes are, it’s a real wonder that they didn’t just cut out any repitition. If they had, the game would be a lot shorter, but it would also be near perfect. I definately think that in terms of sheer SP fun and story, Halo beats Far Cry, no question.

So you like FPS’s and strategy/tactical games.

The two best RTS’s are Rise of Nations and Command & Conquer: Generals. Thrones and Patriots and Zero Hour are their X-pacs respectively. The former is more
in-depth, more historical, but also more overwhelming at times. In C&C: Generals, you deal less with resource management and more on combat. What I like about the resources in Generals is that they must be captured/defended in an all/nothing manner. Resource denial plays a much bigger role than in Rise of Nations where a raid may take out just 1/4 of one resource. Another good thing about Generals is that the counter-units REALLY counter so force selection is more critical than in RoN. RoN, however, has the single best unit control command of any RTS ever. It has every command I’ve ever bitched about missing in other games. While the combat in RoN is certainly more theoretically strategic, the combat in Generals is a bit more effectively strategic. Others will disagree. If you tell me what you do and don’t like about the RTS’s you’ve played in the past I can make a better recommendation

The best current FPS is “Call of Duty” followed by “Far Cry.” The former is a must.
Turn based strategy: Civ 3 - incredible game but late game battle get’s a bit tedious so I typically use other means of victory.

Adventure: I’d still go with Grim Fandango with The Longest Journey as a somewhat distant second.

Planescape: Torment is a few years old, a little difficult to find, and it doesn’t have the flashiest graphics.

It also is simply the best game ever released for the PC platform. Ever.

The vehicles and level design make it different. You can stage a head-on raid with two Warthogs to grab the enemy’s attention, while your other teammates are sneaking through the tunnels. If your flag carrier is stranded, you can grab a Banshee and fly it over to him, then torch an enemy with your flamethrower and drive his Ghost over to the enemy’s turret so they can’t shoot the flag carrier down.

Sure, if you want to set up some crazy PC software to trick your Xbox into thinking the internet is a LAN. But if you’re that close to the PC anyway, why not just play Halo on it? :stuck_out_tongue:

If you need a “killer feature” to make Halo on the PC worth it, then here you go, two words and an ampersand: keyboard & mouse.

Well, to be fair, on the Xbox it runs at 30 fps, 640x480. A mid-range PC with a GeForce 4 can manage that, but most PC gamers expect higher resolution and frame rates. (And hardware anti-aliasing, which Halo doesn’t support at all.)

No kidding. There are only a handful of multiplayer maps in online rotation, but all except one are outdoors, and they’re all pretty unique. Why would you want to play co-op, going through the same hallways over and over?
