That’s right. A liar. Do not for a second try to tell me that you don’t know who Kim Kardashian is or pretend that you only have some vague notion about the Kardashians in general. Unless you have been living in a cave for the past 10 years, without electricity, without internet access, without human contact of any kind, you fucking well know exactly who the Kardashians are and you’re not a better person by pretending you don’t. And while we’re at it, admit that you listen to Taylor Swift when you’re alone in your car. ---

Them I’ve heard of and seen photos. But when my 89 yr. old mother and I were standing in line at the grocery, and she started asking who all those “famous” or news worthy people were on the magazine covers trying to save their marriages, have babies, get a divorce etc., I had to admit I had no earthly idea. ---

I know it’s hard to believe but some of us actively avoid certain news. I didn’t have a facebook page until last week. I don’t read the kind of news online that (generally) covers the Kardashians. I know vaguely about her but I didn’t know, for example, that Caitlin Jenner was related to them in any way. I also couldn’t tell you much about them. I think she has a kid? I remember the butt article when she supposedly broke the Internet. I know she has a book of selfies entitled Selfish. I don’t know much more. ---

I can state positively without a doubt that I have never listened to a Taylor Swift song. I have no idea what her voice sounds like. I don’t listen to top 40 radio. I’ve never seen a show with her own it except one episode of Fashion Police where she talked instead of sang. I will fully admit to reading trashy magazine articles about various celebrities including all manner of Kardashi. It doesn’t mean I approve, disapprove, care, or aspire. I just like a good train wreck now and then. ---

I’m more amazed that some people find the idea of avoiding pop-culture so dumbfounding that they anyone who claims to not know about Kim Kardashian is to lie about it. She stars in a reality show and married an NBA player. My neighbor John is divorced drives a bus for the city. If someone asked if I knew John or Kim, I’d react the same way. ---

Setting the bulk of that crap aside was one of the great features of adulthood. Pro-tips: Set up google news so that it doesn’t list the entertainment section. Or sports. Set the radio to NPR. Hey, I’m close to livin’ the OP loca. The only reason I know who the Kardashians are is via shit like The Daily Show and the fact that I take in a fair amount of stand up comedy. I promise you I have never watched a second of that show … or is it shows, there are spin-offs, no? I can’t even tell you with any certainty how many of them there are. Also, I know that Katelyn Jenner is involved in there in some way, but I’ll be fucked if I’m going to try to find out. Now … Taylor Swift. Nope. I couldn’t identify one of her songs on a bet. I listen to Classic Rcok and Alternative type radio, or CDs in the car. But of course I know who she is. She’s friggin’ gorgeous. ---
