I know who Kim Kardashian is in the most general sense: I could probably pick her out of a lineup, and i know she has a show on E!, and that she’s married to either Kanye West or a basketball player. I’m not sure which one her husband is, and if it’s the basketball player I don’t know his name, because I have no interest in sports, and the pictures of her I have seen make her seem less than hot in my eyes so I don’t pay any attention to her when she’s on screen. I don’t know why you think that claim makes me a liar. There’s tons of stuff I don’t know about because I’m not interested in. I don’t know who won the Superbowl this year (or any year) either. Oh, and I’ve never knowingly listened to a Taylor Swift song. I like show tunes. She’s pretty, though. ---

It’s hard not to know something about the Kardashians. They are in the side bars on the internet all the time. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered that their father was part of the OJ trial. I didn’t follow that either and don’t know if he was defense or prosecution. So KK managed to turn that bit of fame, her interesting and very recognizable good looks into a multi-million dollar business. Fine. A TV show too that I’ve never seen. Taylor Swift can’t be avoided either. Not that I try to. Same could be said about Britney Spears a few years ago. I don’t think I ever heard any of their music. I do like female crooners, but the sparkle and glam turns me off a bit. But who am I to talk. KISS backed up by Heart was the first concert I attended (that was something, Hearts first big show. A real all girl rock and roll band.) Whatever floats your boat. As I make it over the 54yo mark in my life, I’ve found that some things from my past are what I still enjoy. I’m not a total stick in the mud, my best friend and I see local music. And a few years ago I started playing banjo. ---

I just love how everyone calling bullshit is admitting they actually knew who Kim Kardashian is, and thus do not fit the OP. I think I saw one person claim to actually not have heard of her. I also love how so many don’t understand the hyperbole in the OP and appear to actually be getting offended. ---

I have the same problem even with infromation I do find interesting and relevant. For instance, I don’t know how one consciously shifts things from one place to another. But when I’m exposed to the same bit of information over and over under different circumstances, I can’t help but retain it, no matter how trivial and superficial it is. One is defined as a functioning member or society by demonstrating that one is familiar with topical subjects. And there are many of them and one is not required to be fully up to speed on all of them. But a little familiarity is not out of the question. Especially since it would take a concerted effort to avoid exposure entirely. For instance, I’ve seen some of the Lord of the Rings movies. I can’t tell one from another. I tried reading the Hobbit years ago and found it dreadfully dull and could not put it down fast enough. So it’s just not my thing. But if we’re in the break room and you bring up something about your Society, I’m not going to stand there and pretend I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about or that I’m above reading or discussing children’s books. That’s all I’m saying.
