I also have a subscription to the paper edition of the _Raleigh News & Observer_ mostly for the comics and puzzles. I was disheartened yesterday when I realized that most pf the news section of the paper was devoted to all the things Trump has been doing to interfere with peoples’ rights and making a laughingstock of the US. I get most of my information from whatever bleeds into this forum or occasionally a bit from Reddit. Been actively trying to ignore as much as possible but it’s not easy. ---

I can’t watch either of those (or any other satire on the subject). I’m past laughing at anything Trump says or does or is. Semi-related, I guess: a couple of weeks ago I logged out of here, which I haven’t done for uncounted years, because I needed a break. I was going to be away for a few days anyway, but I didn’t log back in again until today. I was still reading here (inconvenient when logged out, but possible) but of course I couldn’t post or reply to anyone. That was a very salutary state, where I realized how little I really needed to respond, and how people who were “wrong on the internet” (in my assessment, of course) could continue perfectly well without my attempts at intervention. Now that I have logged in again, I am attempting to post in order to share, rather than to correct. I am hoping to continue that discipline for as long as I can. ---

I have found that working with my (progressive) church is a kind of antidote. Last Sunday someone brought in a local civil rights lawyer to introduce a refugee couple from Russia. Arrested for protesting the war against Ukraine, they were imprisoned in Russia, managed to get released and fled to the US – where they were imprisoned in Mexico, then in Texas, and after nearly a year the lawyer got them their visas. They live with the lawyer, in our little town, and are desperately looking for work; they had middle class jobs in Russia. They barely speak English. We are helping them as best we can. It’s a lot better – for everyone – to help where you can, than to crawl under your desk and wait. ---

Yep. I mean, kudos to those who can follow the news, but my mental health has been 100% better after just turning off all news channels and websites some year or two ago. Whatever news I get is whatever trickles down to me here and whatever incidentally comes to me. I do not seek it out, and I used to be in the news business a couple decades ago, so I used to live for news. ---
