Oh dear, I am sorry. Damn. I’ll bet you wish you’d given that Forest Ranger recruiting pamphlet a longer look now, eh?
My problem with MSNBC and pretty much all the other 24-hour news stations is the vast percentage of air time occupied by that which is not news. As @Cardigan expressed it so eloquently above:
Anyway, you (@Cartooniverse) have my sympathy for your enforced exposure to what seems to me to be a toxic environment.
As part of my campaign to avoid being annoyed by political BS, I just suspended one of my Facebook groups. The purpose of the group is discussing growing up in Chicago, but over the past few months it has been taken over by (among other things) people on both left and right sides posting memes on commentary on the candidates. The administrators, if they still exist, do nothing about stopping this despite all the complaints from group members. They even allow people to post anonymously and then close the post to comments.
You might try the Alaska Frontier Group. It’s almost exclusively photos of my beautiful home state without political BS.
Mr. brown, now excited by the Kamala Harris campaign, has ramped up his reading of political articles out loud to me. I’m pleased with Ms. Harris, will vote for her, and have contributed to her campaign. But I don’t want to hear about any more political shenanigans and mud-slinging, of which I’ve had more than my fill over the last eight years.
Today it got to the point where I invented some errands to take me out of the house and out of earshot of Mr. brown. I took my time so that when I returned, he’d be ready for his afternoon nap. He’s now upstairs sleeping and I have youtube tuned to the Katmai grizzly bears catching salmon. The sound of the river is delightfully soothing and non-political.
Love that website. I also frequent the Alaska Frontier Group on FB, which is pretty much just pretty photos of the Northland.
I’m old enough to remember when most of the political campaigning was based on the actual issues, not on bad-mouthing your opponent.
Sad to say, I drifted back to political news after Biden dropped out of the race. But it’s gotten so ugly and depressing that I’m going to have to limit my exposure again until the election is over.
I hear ya. I can’t seem to tear myself away…what with the election being right around the corner.
My hubs has the news on constant, ugh. It’s so awful, and it’s CBC! Wherever you turn it’s all awful it seems.
(Current Best cure is, Ocean Conservation Namibia, saving seals, an honourable endeavour, of course. Requires extremely fit, young, strong, athletic men. The combination is quite captivating.)
I enjoy the Canadian News media bc they are less focused on the US, and I learn about their issues, which is comforting, bc then I can say, with objective callousness: “Thank God there is nothing for me to do about it”. They seem to have somewhat of their own clown show up there, too, but at least it is within the parameters of a normal circus not a nightmare circus. For videos, if you like chill Canadians, the guy who does stealth camping on YouTube is one I would recommend. Definitely gives you perspective about life, and how to survive in an urban situation, plus he is funny and has a wonderful Canadian accent.
Postcards mailed! Thank you, @commasense. And now it’s time for me to think about something else until this is all over.
Thank you for doing the good work.
Good job! We got our 300 in the mail also.
Yep, my 200 went out on the 15th.
Hey, if any of you folks in Ohio get a postcard hand-printed in blue-black ink, it might be from me! Go vote!
Ours went to Nevada and Georgia.
Mine went to Georgia too. “Dear Ignorant Undecided Moron.”
Kidding.
I just thought that.
Now I’m wondering if I can volunteer to drive people to the polls. I don’t do well phone banking, too frustrating, and my hand got tired writing postcards. But early voting has started, and maybe people still need a lift to the polls.
I volunteered to do that for people in our building. There is a 12 passenger van and driver that can take people, but if they need to move extra asses, I can do that.
I thought about offering my car and my services to my immediate community, but the thought that I might be helping a Trump voter cast his ballot put me off. Better, I think, to offer my car and services to the local Democratic party who have screened voters for their likelihood of voting Blue.
Huh, the algorithm spit that very one out at me just a couple of days ago. More Youtube rabbit holes…
