I'm done with the MLB

[Moderating]

UltraVires, you know that betting is not allowed, and you therefore… make a bet? A willful violation of the rules like that will earn you a Warning.

MLB has long been of the opinion that the biggest problem in baseball is there isn’t enough offense. The home run race in '96 is what they want every year. I think if they could figure out a way to make the shift illegal they would. Just like in the NFL those of us who like defense aren’t the fans they want in the long term and that probably means I’ll drop out of following MLB like I did with the NFL.

To be super nitpicky, it’s the player who is immediately before the lead-off hitter in the batting order. So usually the one who made the last out, but not always (for example, in some caught stealing situations).

And for anyone else curious how it will be scored if the runner reaches home, it’s an unearned run.

Could I direct your attention to this thread, please?

Bolding mine.

I attend (or at least I did attend) a lot of MLB & MiLB ball.

It’s been years since all the concessions weren’t closing down during the 7th and fully shut down by the middle of the 8th.

IME nobody is buying any hot dogs in the 9th, much less the 10th.

This is all about trying to fit even the tie games into a 3 hour timeslot on TV. Nothing more and nothing less. Just like NHL’s changes to 4 on 4 then a shootout.

Professional sports are simply the original version of reality TV. They’re TV shows first and foremost, not athletic contests. What TV wants, TV gets. More accurately, what TV’s sponsors want, TVs sponsors get. They’re the customers for the product MLB, NFL, et al, are creating.

I go to a lot of games as well, both MLB and MiLB. Never seen the concessions completely shut down in the 9th before. No beers sales, obviously, but the stands are open, and the vendors are in the aisles.

Same experience here.

DH EVERYWHERE is evil.

Okay, that’s a bit hyperbolic. It DOES, however, transmogrify games in which it appears into not-baseball.

When I played in high school, I wasn’t particularly good but I was an athletic kid so I could pull it off. I never made starter but we did have this goofy friggin’ rule - and I’d be curious to know how common this was - designated runner. What would happen is our 250 pound behemoth would crack a rope to the gap and waddle down to first where I would take over and steal second, but he would maintain his place in the lineup; I’d only get in the game if he got on base. Even while I was doing it, and grateful for getting a little playing time, I thought it was ridiculous. Now I fear I’ve given the MLB another goofy idea to run with.

Just to be on the safe side, I think you should ask a mod to delete this part of your post.

There’s a lot of merit in the idea of having umpires enforce pace of play. The correct pace of play in a baseball game is the one that results in a nine-inning game lasting 3.5 - 4 hours.

Give or take.

and their Mickey Mouse shit.[/quote]

It is the NBA that is playing at Walt Disney World at their Wide World of Sports Complex - not Major League Baseball. As a side note, the Atlanta Braves in 2019 played their final spring training game at the Wide World of Sports Complex. They moved their spring training site to Venice, Florida.

I’ll add to the pile on. It varies from park to park but usually beer sales cut off after the 7th inning stretch. A lot of the smaller kiosks that may only sell one or two things will shut down, but the main concession stands will be open until pretty much the last customer. The guy that guzzling beer all game might want some nachos to start soaking up the beer.

Actually the correct pace of play should be 2 to 2.5 hours. Like it was from the 1900 through the 1970s and I believe into the 1980s at least.

They ignored steroids for years because they wanted more offense after the 94 strike wiped out the world series. Most fans don’t want a pitching duel they want home runs and offense.

It never made sense to have 2 sets of rules with the DH. No other major sport does that in the US. I wonder if anywhere in the world has 2 sets of rules.

Went to a game in Seattle in 87 that was 1:58 , shortest game of the year. Mariners beat White Sox 2-0. It was in Sept. and both teams were bad , about 5k fans there.

Yup. The average length of a 9 inning game in 2019 was 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Nonsense. They had been ignoring steroids and other performance enhancing drugs for decades before then as well.

They did not officially ban steroids until 2005 and HGH in 2011.

Okay? What’s your point? How does that refute the fact that steroids and PEDs had been ignored for decades, and not just post-1994?

Yeah, it’s just as likely that amphetamines caused inflated offensive numbers (those numbers dropped quite significantly the year after amphetamines were banned). Those greenies and red juice had been in MLB clubhouses since the 50s.
