I’ve been sitting on this idea, and expanding on it, in my head for about two years, and have only now begun trying to work it into a coherent story. I wrote a little bit earlier last year, but abandoned it, and now I’m coming back to it again. It’s going to be a cyberpunk story set in a major U.S. city in the Northeast sometime in the future. It will be from the perspective of a young officer in the fascist-type government’s police force, and his experiences on the street in the dangerous area that he is assigned to patrol along with other armored police.

Instead of being from the perspective of a fringe element of society, and therefore in opposition to the “man” and the powers that be, it will follow this armored brute who is very much empowered and is able to step all over everyone else.

> “What you wanna mess with me? What the fuck, man? What the fuck?” The acid-tripped punk waved his hands in my face. “Man, what the fuck?!” He gesticulated wildly, salivating. “You motherfuckers! You motherfuckers!”
> “Look at me.”
> The punk stopped raving and turned his head. Hoyle released the catches on his helmet – I felt my chest tighten as I realized what he was doing. He pulled it up, slowly, then yanked it off completely. Immediately I was hit by that hollow, horrible feeling as I first took in what I had heard so much about. His pale blue eyes were normal, but everything beneath them was utterly hideous. His nose was blunt and twisted downwards in an unnatural way. The mouth was huge and gaping, stretching from one side to the other in a joker’s grin, with no outward lips to be seen – his cheekbones and jaw were deformed-looking and awkward, and he did not appear to have a chin. He abruptly grabbed the punk, now shaking, by the collar of his shirt, pulled him within a few inches, and screamed a high-pitched shriek.
> By now a small group had gathered to witness the scene, and Hoyle let go of the guy’s collar. The acid-head sucked in a deep breath, his eyes popped wide-open, and then fell to his knees, puking dark brown vomit all over the concrete. He was sobbing uncontrollably as he was heaving, his mind obviously having been totally blown by what he had seen. Hoyle kicked him on the shoulder, and he fell down onto his side and lay in the vomit, writhing and mumbling. He then gave me a sideways glance, raised his eyebrows, and put his helmet back on, clicking the catches shut. Hiding that horrific, jarring face behind a black visor, where nobody would have to see it unless he wanted them to.

This selection is describing an incident in which Hoyle, the group’s lieutenant, whose face is severely and terrifyingly disfigured, sadistically frighten a kid who’s tripping out on acid in the street. Hoyle is going to be one of the more interesting characters - his backstory is that he became a cop because he would be able to wear a helmet (these cyberpunk cops wear armored suits and helmets) and nobody would have to see his face (his whole life, he had to endure people being jarred and disturbed by his facial appearance.)

There is more of the story, in bits and pieces, and I’m just now stitching it all together. I may illustrate it, also, when it’s done.
