I’m getting advertisements even though I’m a paid member. I thought that paying for a membership is supposed to stop advertisements. For instance, when I go from the Straight Dope home page to the message board page, I get a huge pop-up filling most of the screen that’s an advertisement for something. What’s going on? ---

Are you sure it’s connected to SDMB? Do you get it on other sites? I’m a paid up member too but haven’t experienced this on the board. I do get the occasional popup or popunder on other sites though, even though I’m armed to the teeth with Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Popup Blocker, etc. Advertisers are always finding new ways around the adblockers so you’re bound to find the odd one slipping through sometimes, it’s a constant game of catchup. Just tried going to the SDMB main page, no popup and no blocked popup reported. Proves nothing, of course, but I’d certainly check your device for malware. If you’re clean then it may well be the board, although as I say I’ve had no ad problems here in a long while. ---

I’m getting the same effect, too, as a pop-under, and it’s definitely connected to this website. No, do not have malware, have scrubbed, scanned, ad-blocked and so forth my computer. We scan on at least a weekly schedule around here. It’s the only site I’m getting that from. It’s not constant, either, I don’t get it every time I’m here but it is happening. ---

This has been discussed in other threads the last two weeks. It’s not a malware problem. [Ed’s announcement of a new kind of ad to start running the beginning of May](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=755762) I get the same pop-under ad when going from the Home page of the SD to the Message Board., Not every time, but frequently. And I’m a paid member who is always logged in. But being logged in doesn’t have any thing to do with being on the SD home page. I doubt that Ed’s aware of this very specific complaint, so I’ll email him and see if he’ll comment. ---

Ghostery seems to have killed all ads as well as the pop-unders for me. ---

I get it as well. It seems to happen the first time in a session that I go from the Straight Dope home page to the message board page. As **samclem** says, being on the Straight Dope home page is unrelated to message board member status. When I go back to the SD website and click on the message board link while still in the same browser session, I don’t get the pop-under. ---

I have noticed the same thing happening. FWIW, you’re not alone. It’s the pop-under. I leave them sit until I’ve got a collection going, then I go through and close them. ---

I’m still getting the pop-under when I go from the main page to the message board page. I also get an advertisement right on the page when I read one of Cecil’s columns. Yeah, I know that these aren’t part of the message board. They’re still annoying. I wish they would get rid of them.
