Just got out of surgery three hours ago. Arm is tightly bandaged from above the elbow to the wrist and in a sling. It will remain so for a week. Drugs have moderated the pain. Doctor said he “shaved down” my elbow to boot to make sure the relocated nerves “fit”. If I let my arm hang in the sling I can use that hand to type without much difficulty.
Becky2844, thanks for asking. My hand swelled up to the size of an eggplant. Vicodin is keeping the pain away. (Drugs are good. Drugs are wise. Trust d-r-u-g-s) And lottsa lottsa ice too.
Regardless of the swelling, can use the arm good enough to make an omelet.
Its achy though. Doctor called to see how I’m do’in. Its gonna be about 6 weeks. Can’t feel noth’in in the hand due to the surgery.
More soon. I’ll post updates every few days to keep the thread go’in.
Is it wrong that I am excited I can join in this thread?
What I have isn’t exactly the same; I have subluxing ulnar nerves. Basically, my nerve jumps out of the tunnel in my elbow, as it is too loose to stay put. I’ve slept with a brace on my left elbow off and on for 3 years now, and most of the symptoms have gone away. The numbness is gone, but I can still wake up with numb hands if I don’t wear the brace at night.
The Good Doctor told me he was going to “shave my elbow” to create a better pathway for my nerves to rest in. I won’t see him for another week to get the details on what he actually did. The surgery wasn’t as traumatic as I initially suspected. May be a week or two before I can pick my nose with that hand.
Glad to hear the surgery went well, and you can already function some. Good luck with a speedy recovery!
I assume you have physical therapy in your future. Take it seriously. Discuss how much to exercise with your therapist, and understand when more is better, and when more is going to cause problems.
How long before the swelling goes down? Guess that’s when you find out about hopefully absent numbness and tingling. But that you can already use the hand to help cook shows you’ve got strength in your fingers and that’s a Yay! Keep popping the pills.
I got lucky Digital is the new Analog. When I told my physical therapist that I was going to get the surgery, he raised his elbow and showed me his scar. Think I will be in good hands.
Yes Becky2844, I can scratch my butt. Ya know how I know? Ever do Vicodin for a prolonged period of time?
My hand is still really swollen. Not much pain in the elbow. I can move the arm around to cook but I have zero strength in the arm, meaning I can barely lift a pan. Fingers are still numb.
Well, it’s been a little over three weeks since the surgery. The Good Doctor said my Ulnar nerve was severely pinched so he had to do some filing on the elbow bone (Medial Epicondyle?) There has not been much pain since the procedure, but the elbow area is always achy. The original bandages came off after a week. I’m gonna have a nice scar around my elbow. The skin near the incision is still puffy. The elbow itself is still sore so I continue to use a sling. I am beginning to feel the effects of the nerve being “released”. The ring finger and pinky are only about half as numb as they were before the operation. The whole hand is becoming more usable. I haven’t seen my physical therapist yet but have started simple exercises such as slowly stretching my arm out straight and slowly rotating it above my head. I’m also practicing rolling a quarter over my knuckles. Strength wise the arm itself is still weak and it lets me know when it gets too stressed as when I try to lift anything greater than a few pounds.
All in all I’m glad I had this procedure done. I’ll know more (and will post) at the 3 and 6 month anniversaries.
