I'm going to catch it for this, White Privilege is not a thing....bear with me:

It says that socioeconomic disadvantage gets you 20 points. It does not say being white/asian and poor counts.

Not only are non-black students (whites, in particular) being recruited to attend historically black colleges and universities, they are eligible for scholarships that explicitly exclude the blacks. So yes, there is Affirmative Action for whites in special circumstances.

Personally, I know a white (Jewish) doctor who has a very successful practice. But her MCAT scores weren’t that great. The only institution that would give her a break was Morehouse School of Medicine. Her whiteness certainly didn’t hold her back.

What exactly, in your mind, is the difference between being poor and “socioeconomically disadvantaged”? The only possible reading of that quote is “You get 20 points if you’re a minority or you’re poor.”

Actually one can have quite a bit of wealth but still have challenges such as a rotten education, being a gang member, getting caught shoplifting, or other disadvantages.

Sorry if that was snarky, treis, it just occurred to me you really might not be familiar with that term. I’ve been up to my ears in that kind of lingo since I started undergrad and finished with my MSW. In grad school I heard that expression about every five minutes. ‘‘Socioeconomically disadvantaged’’ means coming from a background of poverty, and does not exclude white people, or Asian people, or any kind of people that are poor.

I think ‘‘at the Provost’s discretion’’ is a relevant bit too. For example, someone who earned straight Bs while caring for a disabled relative could be flagged and awarded points at the Provost’s discretion.

Sometimes I wonder if people start these threads in the first place just to get attention… Anyway. No grand sweeping statements here, but an observation. My half sister is half Hispanic. Our mother is pretty much all Swedish ancestry. Her father is Cuban and Puerto Rican; mine is another Swede. She told me yesterday that she just doesn’t want to go to Lake Oswego clients with our landscaping company anymore (old-money suburb of Portland.) And I know why, because I’ve seen it.

(we’re working at a customer’s house)
(police car cruises by)
(cop gets out and asks her something)
(I run up from the back yard)
Me: HI! (pulling blonde hair from under hat) Officer, is there a problem?

Apparently not.

You don’t even want to know about the incidents we personally witnessed with our African-American employee, 6’4 with dreadlocks…
