Next week will be a bit strange. I’ll be driving from Tampa, Fl to Chicago, via a weird route through South Carolina and Virginia to allow me to see as many family members and friends as possible. I want Waffle House for breakfast along the way. In particular, I want the strong coffee that can wake up Wyoming. I’d really like the spicy sausage patties, but I’m not sure they’re available. I’m also wanting omelettes, and those southern style biscuits. Does Waffle House still serve breakfast 24 hours a day? ---

The local ones do. And if you can’t find a Waffle House, then Huddle House is practically the same thing. ---

omg yes. Try to stop while it’s still dark out so the steamy windows will make you feel like you’re in a cocoon. Sausage patties, hashbrowns smothered and covered, runny eggs… The cook at one used to sing requests but if you can’t find that, they still have jukeboxes. ---

I was at one in the Florida panhandle that made me sign the receipt saying I insisted on having my eggs runny. Some department of health paranoia about salmonella. ---

The only Waffle House problem: nothing but American cheese. Makes for a rather insipid omelette. Other than that, good food most of the time. My local one has mediocre coffee, however. ---

I have tried and tried to recreate the Waffle House “Cheese n Eggs” at home, but without success. They blend the cheese and eggs together so perfectly- and no one else does it the same way. I do not live in a Waffle House area. Waffle House is one of my favorite things about doing road trips. Jealous. ---

I think they’ve changed within the past decade, but for the longest time WH never accepted credit or debit cards. It’s the only place I check for the visa/mastercard labels on the door before I go in. ---

I’ve been to a Waffle House exactly once. When a waffle place does not have butter or margarine but only a butter-inspired spread and think you’re strange for wanting real butter, they don’t get a second chance. ---
