# I'm going to the Phillipines!

I’m really excited (I first wrote “exciting”…boy, that would have been a lie), so I’m just spamming everywhere I post. I’m working on my masters in public policy and my department has a program where you spend half a semester studying development issues in a specific country (this year it’s the Philippines), and then you get to go there during spring break to visit with government officials and development agencies and NGOs and also do a bit of sightseeing. The whole thing is paid for by the university and outside fundraising.
Anyway, getting into the program is really competitive…and I got accepted this year!

Someone new for the locals to try to get to eat balut.
IMO, out of the various SE Asian cuisines I’ve tried, filipino food is the worst, and unfortunately it is the one I’ve eaten the most. San Miguel is a decent beer, but the local hooch will rot out your intestines.
A quick primer:
Hindi - no
Oo - yes
Paki - please (they don’t use it a lot in casual conversation, but may use it to outsiders)
Salamat - thank you
Walang anuman - you’re welcome (again, not used often amongst themselves)
Mangandang umaga - good morning
Mangandang hapon - good afternoon (lunch time)
Mangandang tanghali - good afternoon (late)
Mangandang gabi - good night
Mangandang hating gabi - good “midnight”
Kumusta ka? - how are you? (sounds just like the spanish)
and the ones I use most often:
Ano sa English? - What’s that in English?
Hindi ko naintindihan - I don’t understand.

I’m a vegetarian, but I eat eggs. I…think balut will be off the menu.

It’s only like, nine days, and we’re going to spend most of the time doing actual Educamational Stuff, so I doubt that will happen. Unless it is edumacational?
